What all would need to be done to a 1998 4T65E-HD (from a Regal GS W-body) during a rebuild to prepare it to drop into a 2004 H-Body (LeSabre)?

I am thinking in terms of torque converter, line fittings, valve body / PCS update, harness / controls (98 is non-IMS, 04 is IMS), and whatever else I'm overlooking.

(I have DHP PowrTuner for the gear ratio change, and I know I'd need a Bonneville SSEi passenger axle)

    Thanks

Are you putting together a parted out car? What I mean is where is the trans that came with the vehicle? There is a lot of headache involved in swapping out trans with modern cars. If you have the original trans I'd stick with that, if not then you need to know what gear ratio your comp is programmed for and either find the trans that has it or make it during your rebuild. It's not as hard as it sounds, but you'd be much better off with the unit that came out of your car. Every transmission can be built to handle what 98 percent of street guys need, except for saturns and hyundai's but no one cares about those.

Didn't H-bodies use 4T80Es? Otherwise, it shouldn't be much problem other than mounts.

i might be off on this, but i dont think this particular swap is as easy as you would hope. i am pretty sure that the 04 lesabre uses a trans with an internal range switch, not the external like the regal's. while im positive there is a way around that, it's not an easy job to do. the trans housing itself should have the right mount points, if anything they may need drilled and tapped for the h-body brackets.

i know im not trannyman and dont have all the answers you seek, but hopefully a bit helpful. i can understand wanting to save someone some $$ by using the 98 trans, but not entirely sure if it's worth it in the end.

Honestly its not worth the trouble you will have to go through to make it work, but IF you must then here are a few things that need to be done. You will need to swap the internal linkage and internal mode switch, valve body/pump/seperator plate, wire harness, check ID code for gear ratio and make that the same if different. The cooler line fitting is where your big problems will lay as the 98 trans uses a smaller thread in the case for the feed to the cooler, so you cannot install a 00+ quick connect fitting here. You can drill and tap this hole with the proper pipe thread tap but isnt something I suggest doing. The torque converter will likely be different and again you will have to match up with what is in the 04. I hope this helps you out but it is a lot of work and you would be time and money ahead to use the correct model

    Thanks for the info.

Looks like if I want to build up a trans for the '04 car, a newer donor trans is certainly the way to go.
