I dont feel like pulling my diff... I just put new Dex-VI in it last night =O. That is the little pin in the diff right? Maybe?

Random question: any way to salvage the fluid I put in last night if I go in and do the diff? Spent 60 bucks on fluid and filter =(. I was thinking about sucking it out or draining it all into a brand new drain pan via one corner of the tranny pan.

Is the too much metal on the magnent? Thats about exactly what I had in my pan when I changed the fluid and filter last week.

No idea... dont know if its normal. This transmission has maybe 15-20k on it... lol. Was running DexIII until now. I was disappointed to see so much on the magnet and so much clutch material in the fluid, but again... dont know if its normal.

That magnet isnt the prettiest and there shouldnt be that much material on there with that low of mileage unless the trans has had a lot of very hard miles on it, but still that is a bit of debris. That first pic looks to be a pic of the roll pin broken that holds the cross pin in the differential. If you could get a better pic of just that pin and measure its diameter and length I will tell you for sure. If it is the roll pin from the diff then that metal/debris could mainly be from your diff...

I wouldnt say they are very hard miles... but Ive got maybe 25-30 track passes on this transmission with NO burnouts. I do creep forward and squeal the tires to clean them off though.

I dont have the pin with me but its no more then an inch long and no less then half an inch.

I miss you at ClubGP Trannyman... <3. If you were local to me Ide just bring my **** to you. I dont trust anyone local to work on my stuff.

Is the pin black in color? Being that it is two pieces there is likely one piece left in the diff or pin still waiting to cause trouble. If it is black and roughly 5/32 in diameter then it is definately the roll pin that holds the cross shaft in the diff and you really need to pull the diff cover to inpsect before you are left with a car that doesnt move!

Scotty..... I feel for you man but DAMN what a mess!!!! AND you just gave me a great idea that I havent seen on here yet......

Dear.... God. Lol... wtf is that ****? I geuss its safe to say my transmission is in the best shape possible when compared to yours?

The pin is not black, its silver/metallic.

Is it safe to drive the car with that pin snapped like that as long as I dont try to do crazy burnouts or hard acceleration around corners?

Completely seperate issue: Is it possible with that pin gone that something is "clanking" around in there and causing false knock? Just wondering... Ive had a weird false knock issue at 1-4% throttle for a few months.

Unless it got polished up from coming out, which I really doubt, Im not sure where it came from then and your only option really is a bearing coming apart inside the trans or converter. When you get a chance measure it and see what the diameter is

LOL. I tell people yeah, I destroyed my Differential and the tranny is dead, but I DESTROYED my differential with emphasis on the power aspect.

Whats the idea, a deeper pan to hold more carnage?

This is what PRJ had to say...

You should pull and fix/replace your diff immediately.

The pinion gear shaft is now floating back and forth, scraping the inside of the end cover, sending lots of alimunum bits throughout your trans. Eventually, it will cut through and piss itself out. You'll also have debris all throughout your trans, requireing a complete teardown, cleaning, and rebuild. If you catch it early enough, you might get away without having to do a complete rebuild. But most people don't catch it early enough cause they don't change their trans fluid frequent enough, even at 10K mile intervals, the damage will already have been done.

Did you bother to bust open the filter? If it is loaded with aluminum shavings, you can look forward to a rebuild.

This is the #1 cause of trans failures in my opinion, and a good reason to run a Quaife or GMR Torsen differential. It doesn't take much to break the pinion shaft retaining pin. You can easily do it on a completly stock engine setup (I did with only 7K miles on my car and no mods)

    PRJ
You and PRJ are awesome so I geuss I just need to suck it up and pull this ***** out.

Where can I get one of those pins locally?

If you are lucky it is just the pin, but that pin breaks for a reason and that is because the spider gears run dry on lube and try to weld themselves momentarily to the shaft and cause it to spin in the diff carrier and this is what causes the pin to break. Odds are if the pin is broke, which again looking at your pics and definately agreeing with Paul on this, putting in a new roll pin isnt going to fix the problem and it will likely snap again if the cross shaft and spider gears are damaged. The only way to know is to pull the diff and inspect everything. The roll pin is nothing special and if you have a local hardware store or engine machine shop they should be able to find something that will match up and work ok.

So I might have to replace my diff rather then just the pin?

If you pull it out and the parts look bad then yes you will need to replace it, but you wont know until it is out of the car where you can check it out good

Tengis First off you need to pull the diff and inspect it for damage and go from there.. As for the magnent thats normal wear for a hard driven car.. Or some of it could be cause by the pin floatinf around inside there?? Its not shifting funny is it? Because I don't see the roll pin from the diff getting far in the trans with out causing major damage.. If its shifting good no hard shifts or anything weird i'd be kind to it and drive it. And you have a pm about the info you asked me in your other post

Car shifts and drives fine, no noticeable issues with anything transmission related. Ill probably pull the diff... =(

EDIT: Trannyman... assuming that the diff is ok, would it be safe for me to just get a pin from somewhere of equal length/thickness? What are the exact dimensions of the pin?

If the parts look fine you may luck out and just need a new roll pin. Im SURE there is going to be some sort of flaw in my measuring because I have no idea what I am talking about most of the time with these transmissions, but here are pics of the roll pin and calipers' measurements. And at least this verifies that there are plain silver roll pins out there all of the others I have seen are black.

Like i stated before if its ok then pull the diff cover off and check for damage then go from there. and to save the dex 6 get a new drain pain and drain the trans that way and it should be ok to save it if its not to bad with the metal fragements keep us posted..
