Will the transmission from a '97 Buick Riviera work in my '97 GTP? I know the driver's side mount is different, but are there provisions for the GTP mount to be transferred over to this transmission?

i would be worried about the gear ratio in the trans, i believe the two are different, u may have to repeogram your pcm for it to work properly....hope you get more help.

As long as the trans was from a supercharged car it will work ok. The Riv uses different mounts that arent used on the Wbody cars but is not a problem to work around. Just swap the mount with the ones from your GTP and it will install ok.

That's good news! I'll go out there next week sometime and see what kind of deal i can get on it. $200 or less, hopefully.

What about the axles? Are they the same length on both sides?

Use your axles. Riv axles should be longer than GP axles.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

I was just hoping I could grab one or both for spares. Oh well. No big deal. Now, I just need to get out there with a truck and some cash!

From my own experience it's better to get one from a salvage yard rather than picking one from a pick-n-pull yard. Atleast you know it was out of a running car and usually they come with some sort of waranty. Payed well over $900 trying to get a trans I pulled to work. No luck as with one problem fixed another popped up. Ended up paying $400 for a trans out of a running car from a salvage yard some time after. Save yourself the headache and cash!

Also, try and find a newer trans. Especially with the supercharged models, you know they've been driven hard and it's not worth the risk of burnt clutches, bad solenoids, etc.. Lastly, it doesn't have to be the same age. For intance, I picked up a GT trans out of an 02 (which I believe is the last year before they started changing valvebodies) and I have a 98.

The car I'm pulling it from was driven to the yard by an elderly couple that just didn't want it anymore because the s/c was rattling and they thought the engine was shot. Before I got the blower off it, the yard owner let us throw a battery in it and fire it up. Smooth and quiet except for the s/c.
