Ok guys im sure alot more guys on here have the same question so ill man up and ask haha. To all you trans guys out there. I am told it CAN be replaced in the car without taking it out SO DONT SAY TAKE IT OUT... anyways to what extent is it to replace? like what must come out and stuff? if any1 has pictures that would be great. but basic walk through would be great THANK YOU GPF.

Take the damn transmission out, you have the engine out. If not you will have to drop the cradle and dick around with it for no reason.

Drop the cradle, remove side cover, remove oil pump cover, remove oil pump shaft, remove valve body, remove channel plate, remove drive/driven gear sprockets and chain, remove chain scoop, remove 4th clutches, remove 4th clutch shaft. Install in reverse order.

Yeah it sounds like it would be alot easier to do with the engine out.

Nope, engine has nothing to do with it. Other side of the trans. This is easiest with the trans out and tailshaft pointing downward.

Omg honestly? Dont take your tranny into the classroom, everyone will want to look and help, next thing you know you are missing parts and it doesnt work right. Grab you an atsg manual and go at it, nothing even the moderate level mechanic couldnt tackle.

Nothing overly wrong with limping around with only a 3 speed until spring. Keep in mind that the rpms are higher and you are all set.

people have run around for more than a year in these cars without 4th. Hell, an overdrive gear didn't even become common in autos until what, the late 70s/early 80s?

The key here is it's possible with the right care. Obviously it'll use more fuel and he'll need to be cognizant of the higher rpms. Having no 4th gear isn't the same risk as driving a car with low oil pressure, knocking piston rod bearings or one with a grinding transmission.

if he decides to drive around with no 4 th gear we have seen it many times before, the trans is going. period. he should get another trans ready first then just switch it. i drove mine with no fourth and it didnt last long. unfortunetly joe u got your work cut out for you. if i had to do it all over again.......good luck man.
