    Hey Guys,

My transmission was doing ok until a few days ago now whenever I take off it seems to have no power and pressing the gas harder just makes it shudder (I think that is the right description it sounds like a fan hitting a shroud) like when climbing hills it will not gain much speed. Does this sound like the torque converter or transmission?

What is the tach doing during this? Is it really high in the revs, or normal?

Once you get cruising and try to give it some gas does it bog down, say around 4K rpms?

Do you have a CEL at all? When was the last time you did the plugs/wires?

First things first. Check your transmission fluid and level. It should be clear red, not dark, not burnt. And should be at the top of the XXXs.

But how many miles on the tranny? When was the last fluid and filter change?

FWIW if you think your fluid is nice and clean as it should be, wipe the dipstick on a clean white paper towel.

Don't hate me for the trans service. Just keeping that fluid clean for ya.

Tach is normal during all this. It does bog down. No check engine lights and did new plus and wires last month. Fluid has about 30k on it and has like dark grey mud on the stick. Transmission itself has 137k on it. Thanks for all the responses!

So should I change the fluid or is it probably toast? Just asking cause dexron 6 is expensive.

Can't hurt to change the fluid and filter. That is what I would try first.

Do you have any SES codes?

Well it costs about 80 for a fluid change so I dont want to spend that if its not likely going to work. And no ses lights.

Should only cost about $50 if you do it yourself.

Did you scan the car or the light just isn't on. Some tranny codes will not set the SES light. Can you get it scanned?

You mention new plugs and wires a month ago.

What brand and type of plug did you put in?

I haven't had it scanned. I can take it to advance auto will there scanner show the codes or will I have to go to certified transmission? Plugs are autolite 606 copper gapped at 55. I use dex 6 cause I read it was better for all gm transmissions.

You are sure the plug wires on the right cylinders? You'd be amazed at how well two crossed can run.

Yes, plugs are correct. It had been running fine until this weekend and it doesn't shift unless I let off the gas which is why I think it is the transmission.

I'm not sure where you get off recommending this because it is simply not true. dexron VI is the recommended replacement fill for our transmissions, and has been for years. In fact, you will have a hard time even finding Dexron III fluid anymore because it is obsolete.

You may have an opinion about how well Dexron VI works in our trannys, which I can disagree with as well. But the fact remains that Dexron VI is what is recommended to fill our trannys.

I would really think about changing Filter and fluid. Honestly I had it flushed with Dex 3 for the expense, drained it, and filled it with 6 for the best result. Went through two filters, but it really is worth it before a tranny becomes toast.
