I thought I would make this thread to help out if anyone has questions and-or are directing anything towards me to help answer such as a problem or tech question and may have gone unanswered. As many of you have probably noticed I havent been on the forums much the past few months and this is honestly about the only one I get to anymore. Business has been very good and with that means less time for me to be on here as I simply dont have the time. I feel there has been an aweful lot of great info shared on here since this forum started almost 2 years ago and that was one of my highest priorities to help get things rolling and provide a solid info base to use for future referrencing.

By all means PLEASE use the search feature before starting a new thread if you are having a problem and looking for help!!! There is a lot of the same subjects of threads in the transmission section and I see them pop up quite often and a simple search will likely get you what you are looking for but there are also a lot of odd issues that just dont match, but in the case of the common problems many will go unanswered because there is plenty of info that has been covered in the past on these subjects.

For those of you who have been looking for help and tried the search feature and didnt get anywhere so started a new thread you havent recieved the answers you were looking for and I have overlooked the thread and havent been able to help out you are more than welcome to either send me a Private Message on this forum or Email me at [email protected] as this is the best and fastest way to get ahold of me to help out. I have had a lot of fun on this forum helping out and will continue to when I can.

Thanks for those who have read this,

Dave

I have a 2001 Grand Prix se with the 4T65E tranny, recently my third gear will slam into gear under light throttle and if the car has sat over night it will not drop into Drive until it warms up for usually 5-10 minutes. I have to admit I romp on it pretty hard here and there. I tried Lucas transmision fix and noticed little change. The car only hav 60k on it. Any kind of suggestion or solution would be much appreciated, thanks

Get it checked for transmission codes. Could be a pressure solenoid. My car is doing the same thing right now. I'm going to go to a transmission shop and get it checked for free. Gotta love connections. lol.

Hey Trannyman, I have searched the forums and have found users with "almost" the same problems, but not quite so thought I'd ask you to start with.

I have a 99 Grand Prix GT with 3.8. The last month or 2 I'm experiencing several transmission problems:

Starting out from the lights, the car shudders and slips (in all gears except first - if I put it in first I can punch it and no slippage)

Going up hills at about 50-60km/h the car starts bucking - like it's shifting in and out of 3rd and 4th

At highway speed, the rpm's are constantly fluctuating up and down (like it's in 4th, and then "almost" goes down to third....even on a flat stretch the rpm's are always going up and down

If I have 3rd gear selected, the car seems to shift into third, and then almost immediately shifts into 4th

I am trying to decide which way to go with this (dealer or transmission shop), any advice you could give I would really appreciate.

my car is doing ALMOST the same thing, except it is only shuddering in first gear, then all of a sudden a quick jerk, and its done, fine throughout all my other gears except first. find anything out?

im having similar problems...anyone wanna chime in?

Until May of this year, i owned a 1998 Grand Prix GT with the infamous 4T65-E tranny. It preformed great when i bought it at 177,000 miles in May of 2009, being unaware of any common tranny defects. Naturally, the car lost 4th gear/overdrive at around 180,000 miles(which leads me to believe the car had had a tranny rebuild at some point in its life, considering that is rather high mileage for the problem to occur). I was wondering if the 4T65-E HD in the GTP is a more dependable transmission, seeing as how i would love to have another Grand Prix with obviously lower miles.
Thanks

I am having a similar problem with my 2008 GXP. Not all the time, but becoming more frequent, when I start from a complete stop, the car hesitates and then jerks really hard. Shifting thru the other gears is just fine. I have also noticed it when going in reverse from a dead stop. Sometimes the jolt is worse than others and it feels like the tranny is going to break. I have taken it in to the dealer multiple times now (including today) for them to tell me that they cannot duplicate the issue and that its not showing any codes in their computer. But I know its a real issue and don't know what else to do to get them to fix this or at least acknowledge that there is a problem. I can't keep wasting my time taking it in to the dealer all the time just for them to tell me that they cannot duplicate it. It is a very frequent issue and I'm surprised that they have not been able to duplicate it yet. I know that I have plenty of the 100,000 mile powertrain warranty left, but the issue is annoying and I also worry that it will just break completely and leave me stranded somewhere. I did some research tonight and there is a technical service bulletin# 080730002 regarding harsh shifts and slips. Summary as follows:

INFORMATIONAL ON 4T65-E MN7, M15 AND M76 FRONT WHEEL DRIVE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION VALVE BODY RECONDITIONING, DTCS P0741, P0742, P0757, P842, HARSH SHIFTS OR SLIPS. ( NHTSA ITEM NUMBER - 10025065 )

What does this mean? Will they fix this issue or is it just an informational bulletin showing that this has been known to occur but no fix is required? I am going to call them in the morning to ask them about it. I'm going to be pissed if all along, there was a known issue with this and they kept making me waste my time with multiple visits to the service dept. They gave me the impression so far that they think I am being stupid and there is not really a problem.

The only problem my tranny has is when I am in OD going about 55-60 and start to go up hill and give it a little bit of gas, NOT enough to make it downshift just enough to let it maintain speed, my tranny appears to slip. My RPM's just from about 1.5k to 2.5k... Some one on here had said it might be a plug/wire/coil problem. Is that true? My tranny has 225k on it....

1000 rpm sure sounds like it's downshifting. It might be plugs/wires. You know..we will be sarcastic..but we won't intentionally like to you.

If the RPMs are jumping up and down, it could be a TCC or valve body issue.

I'm having the same issue with my GTP. It has 162,000 miles on it. The RPMs don't jump when I'm accelerating but it jerks like it can't decide whether or not to downshift. If I step into it, it down shifts and does fine. It has felt like it slipped twice when starting from a stop too. No SES light. Once in a while I get a ABS light or TC Off but I'm pretty sure that's a separate issue. Have you had any luck getting it fixed?? I've heard it could be a PCM problem, TCC solenoid, plugs, wires, coils, or the transmission going bad.

having the same problems as the rest of you.. first gear fine.. second fine til its time to shift... it slips nd jerks... then might shift to third... if it shifts to third it goes straight to fourth.. then when it hits fourth the rpm jumps up and down like it wanna downshift and continues that..... after i come to a stop and try to take off.. it leaves realllyyyyyyy slow and build up speed.. like its in third gear.... same thing when i try to hand shift it......... 97 gtp

Hi my problem is not the same. my problem is my shift solenoid went out and i am trying to fix it myself as i do all my car work but i never did any work on a tranny before but the fluid and i heard if you go through the driver side wheel well i could get to it but i cant tell what to take off to get to it.
