Got a 2006 grand prix base 137800mi and I'm noticing when the trans gets to about 174* but gets worse around 200-205* it starts this shuttering on occasion when I start from a stop it will hesitate a second then shutter and slam into first then shifts fine through the rest of the gears. Also noticed that after stopping a few seconds later it will shutter occasionally and rpms go and down I thinks its changing gears but I'm stopped? Would a trans fluid change help any or is it just the worst case scenario that the trans will need to be rebuilt?

What condition is the fluid in? Last time is was changed? I would start with dropping the pan, putting new fluid in and a new filter. See if that fixes the issue.

Will adding a shift kit shorten the life of my 126K mile trans? It has that front pump whine and has for about 30K miles since I bought it, other than that it seems fine.

    Thanks

A shift kit should not shorten the life. By engaging the clutches faster it typically is considered to extend the life of the clutches with minimal added force/pressures on the hard parts. However if you have other existing issues, it may not help or mask them.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

Thanks, that's what I figured, I don't expect it to fix my whine but that would be nice!

It probably won't go anywhere. I installed my shift kit 3 years ago, and the wine is the same as before the shift kit. The good thing is that it hasn't gotten any worse.

No damn belt the CVT transmissions can keep them worthless things.....

The chain upgrades are thicker chains than stock.

V8 spec chains from the LS4 cars TEP stocks.
    7/8s chain upgrade. TEP stocks.
1inch chain few around in the classifieds but your going to pay close to 2k for one with gears.
15/16ths chain set used to be an aftermarket option but the 7/8s sets are way more common and stronger.

Can you, yes but there are differences beween the years.

97-02 tranmission are different than 2003+. On the outside they are the same but inside they are slightly different and controlled different.

For a direct plug and play trans swap without doing anything else, you'd need to find another 2003 transmission or get yours rebuilt.
