got a 2000 gtp bad tranny, i got a guy with a 97 gtp, and i was wondering if i install the trans and change the cooler lines, will it throw a service engine soon code??? i dont want to go thru all this just to have that happen. any help is appriciated.

Little confusing.
You have a bad 00 trans and a guy with a 97 GTP, or a 97 GTP transmission? A 97 will fit if you swap lines, you may or may not need the external range sensor...if you do it's a quick easy install.

sorry i tried to edit it after i posted and it didnt....yes its confusing the way its wrote, and its a trans out of a 97 gtp and i was asking wat i needed for the swap into my 00 gtp. thanks for the info.

The range sensors aren't an issue since they're both Grand Prixs. As Bill said, swap the lines and you should be fine.

i figure trans lines runs from trans different, diff. side? or different angle/path?? but hook up to radiator same way... but where is the range sensor located ??? does n e one have a picture, or general knowledge of its location ??? what is involved with hooking up an external range sensor as opposed to internal???

As Doug is aware, I'm used to the Bonneville quirks more than the W bodies. So he's usually fixing up my mistakes on which years got what in W land.
The range sensor can be bolted on rather quickly if a trans does not have an external sensor. The rest of the wiring will be fine. On the connections for trans lines. There are two styles of connections. One is a screw in line, the other is a clip system where the line is similar to a fuel line and clicks into the fitting on the trans and radiator instead of threading in. This is only needed on one of the trans lines as the threads in the transmission casing are a different size on thsi fitting, and the same as the old screw type on the other fitting.
(Reaches in pocket to look at push in type fitting I bought yesterday) GM Part number is 24213958 for the push in style fitting with the check ball in it.
Doug..that probably didn't make sense and you'll have to explain it anyhow..lol

So... you bought this "push in type" fitting with check ball to make your existing trans lines work??? and thats it??? i read the sticky and it said something about threading fitting into case????
i hope i dont have to do that !!!

Might help if I actually came around once in a while, though, I guess.
CRAZYC, as I said earlier, the simplest thing to do is use the cooler lines from the same car as the transmission. If you want to use your stock threaded trans lines, you need to get a specific fitting that will thread into the 00-03 case. GM used it while they were transitioning to the newer style. Intense carries it: INTENSE-Racing.com: 4T65E (and HD)Transaxle Cooler Line Retrofit Fitting
Then take the return fitting from your current transmission and put it in the new one. Everything should then hook right up. The push in connections Bill mentioned are for the newer style transmission lines. The range sensor shouldn't be a big issue, as all of the 97-03 Grand Prixs used the external sensor.
