I just recently picked this car up and had no problems. I had the few hundred rpm shudder and found the fluid level was low..so i added a quart of lucas cuz it was pretty. All symptoms went away and I double checked the fluid which was still a little low so I added a little more. The next day it was totally jacked. It was slipping horribly. I couldnt even give it 25% throttle. It stalled on me twice on the way in and I had to turn it on and off on the way home. So I just pulled the codes and I have p741, 742 and 756. Which I already figured was the converter. ANy suggestions or help would be great. Thanks

To be honest you are looking at rebuild or replacement. P0742 has almost always shown to be a converter clutch coming apart and and contaminating the valve body and trans and causing a lot of other problems. The minimum you should do to help cure this problem without a full rebuild is to pull the trans and replace the converter, replace the valve body, and inspect the input shaft and channel plate for damage.

Thanks for your response. I have a buddy who owns a car lot that is getting a good replacement trans and converter for me hopefully this week. I have looked through the forum and cant seem to find any tips on removal and installation of the trans. Any tips from the do-it your selfers would be great. I have an engine support, jack and jack stands to help

hey man,i done one just a week ago on my 98' GTP.first off i jacked both sides of the car up pretty high and place a jack stand on each side underneath the body of the car i then unhooked the battery, removed the pcm, airbox and assembly, the engine dogbones at the top, unplugged all the tranny wires, disconected the wheel sensor wires also.removed the tire, rotor, brake caliper,cv axle from both sides, removed the tire rod and unhooked the steering gear from the rack and pinion on the left side to avoid damage during the subframe drop.i placed a floor jack underneath the tranny/motor for lowering and 2 more floor jacks under each side of the subframe middle ways for lowering it.remove the 4 subframe bolts and ease the 2 subframe floor jacks down as low as possible.do not forget to unhook or remove your 2 tranny cooler lines from the tranny itself at the bottom front side.remove the tranny support mount on the side cover of the tranny and then proceed to remove the starter, the 3 torque converter bolts, and all of the tranny bell housing bolts.there is one bolt called the b***ch bolt,it is located on the back side of the bellhousing and u will need around 2 and half feet or more extentions to reach it form the passenger side right behind the power steering pump.i believe there are 6 bellhousing bolts in all.remvoe any wires, wiring harnesses or clips in the process.remove the rear tranny mount on the right side completely and then completly remove the dipstick to avoid it from getting damaged.then wiggle the tranny a loose from the flywheel and slide it out and stab the new one in installion is reverse of removal and good luck by the way.i ,on the other hand, did not have an engine hoist or cherry picker available to use so,i managed without it taking around a whole day and a half to remove the old one and install the new one.maybe that will help ya out some i had a good time LOL.

Thanks for your help. I have everything disconnected but was wondering where I can find this b**ch bolt at and how to locate it? I know the previous owner had the trans rebuilt so hopefully they left it out. And how many bolts are there exactly holding the trans to the motor?

I figured it out. I just had to remove the bracket that was blocking it. It really wasnt that hard to get out. Now I am just waiting to find out if my buddies shop can get me a replacement or if he is going to rebuild it for me.

wtg man and goodluck yea that bolt aint that hard unless u really notice to remove that back bracket.because it is so hard to see everything inside and behind that engine and back of tranny unless u completely pull motor/tranny out as a combo.but anyway have a good one and your welcome.
