Thought I would share some pics of the tranny carnage. I'll let the pictures tell the story, there's not much I can add to it.

    First, the Transmission Pan:

    Next, the Transmission Filter:

    And for good perspective:

I think I'll save the shavings and make a souvenir out of them. Maybe a miniature replica 4T65E.

I'd say the tolerances within the trans are still good for a John Deer Tractor!!!!!

I have never seen so many tiny metal shavings before....WOW!!!!!

best of luck! You can do It!!!

It looks to be mostly from the differential but I dont know that for fact yet as I havent gotten it pulled out. I hope to get that done tomorrow, though its supposed to get cold again so we'll have to see how that pans out.

Ouch Scotty!!! I must say I have seen a lot worse but that is pretty bad! At least you did drop the pan, I know some guys just swap the diff and keep driving Get some pics up of the diff when you get it pulled, also look VERY closely at the teeth on the internal ring gear.... The piece that the diff actually rides inside.

I got a pretty good peek at it actually Dave. I didnt see any damage to it with what I could see. I probably got a good look at about 60% of it. I was actually quite surprised, I would have thought for the amount of metal in the pan that anything in contact with that differential would have been chewed up pretty good.

I will tell you that the sun gears on the differential looked pretty chewed up. I know those parts can be replaced, but I believe the spare differential I have is in excellent shape.

If I do nothing tomorrow, Im going to do my very best to get that differential pulled out and snap some pics of it.

Oh, also, what are the odds any of that metal made it through the rest of the transmission? I guess there's no way to tell exactly, but it looked to me that most if not all of it was stopped at the filter.

Nows when I wish I had went ahead and put on that external filter, 'cause I would probably know for sure.

As Abby would say (our 2 year old) YUCK!!! We have seen some tranny's with more metal than that, and yeah the metal would have gone through the tranny as well.

    Damn!

I think you should melt the debris down, and make something cool out of it. LOL

I wouldn't even mess with rebuilding the diff. Scrap it, and replace it. Thats what I would do.

How did the diff. cover come out? I'm sure the inside have some nice marks in it. I feel for you man. Its a worry for any of us when we drop our pan.

I havent gotten the diff cover off yet. I have it loose and ready, but I need to remove my oil pressure sending unit so that I can get the cover completely off and then take the differential out. I have a replacement diff, but I would like to rebuild the damaged one so that I can use it in the spare tranny I have.

    I hate that...

In order for me to remove my diff., I have that, plus my Intense remote oil filter bracket to deal with too. time the diff. was out, the transmission was completely out of the car. No problem then right. LOL i know what you mean...sucks we have to remove mods to remove a stock part. Makes you ask yourself...if it wasn't installed here, would I be done by now?

Ive got the differential out and have taken some pics of the damage. I'll have them posted up shortly after I process them for levels and size.

Okay, well it appears, based on my inspection, all the damage is localized to the differential. The differential housing had a couple minor scrapes in it, but nothing major. But I have a spare if needed.

The ring gear, the gear the differential sun gear roll in seems in near perfect condition given the damage to the differential. I saw a few chipped teeth but nothing anywhere near the damage to the differential. Anyway, without further delay, here are the pics, there are many of them.

First, what I found on the speed sensor:

It had oil coming out of the electrical connector, so I suppose I'll have to replace that:

    Next, the differential housing:

    Now, the differential:

I dont know what that middle gear is called, but its so chewed up it wouldnt come out and on my spare diff I can pull that gear out with little effort.

These next few pics show the ring gear the differential spins around in. I put these up more for the benefit of Trannyman so he can give me his opinion:

For good measure here is what a good differential looks like. Incidentally, this one has a reported 100k on it according to the previous owner:

So there you have it. Pretty cool huh?
Special thanks go out to UR LOSN who has kept encouraging me that I could get this thing out of the transmission. I have never done transmission work in my life other than fluid and filter changes. Im learning stuff, so Im happy about that and while I hate that the tranny has the trouble it does, Im actually kinda enjoying it because I am learning and Ive been taking notes and pictures, obviously, do try and do a write up on how to pull and replace the differential.

Yeah. Im hoping to have it cryo treated and slap it in there and see if the old one was the source of the noise Ive been hearing all along.

Scotty you arent going to want to hear this but DO NOT PUT YOUR OTHER DIFF IN THAT TRANS!!!!!!! The ring gear is damaged and there is no way around that other than completely tearing apart the trans and replacing it. Lucky for it is the last part that comes out and first one to go back in! If you try to put your good diff in that ring gear it will be garbage in a matter of miles, trust me I have been down that road before as an oversight a long time ago because a very very small piece of tooth was chipped! The car will have a strange noise when driving it and in a short matter of miles the new diff will be junk also as the ring gear is very hard metal and the planet and sun gears are pretty soft and get chewed up easily. The center gear in the diff is called the SUN gear, the 4 gears on the end of the diff are called PLANET gears.
