I was really hoping you would have something to say other than that.

Tell me what hard parts I need to get and I guess I'll start breaking this thing down. I was kinda hoping to get it back on the road soon, but I guess Id be better just getting the transmission swapped unless there is some way to change out that ring gear in the car.

Sorry Scotty, there is no way to change out the ring gear in the car and be able to put everything back together properly lined up inside and frankly is not worth the hassle to even try. With the ring gear in the condition that it is you will really have to look over everything else inside as those particles likely are everythere and I cant stress the importance of going over things with a fine tooth comb and cleanliness inside!

Well, guess its back to square one and putting all the parts together for the spare tranny. Guess I'll get in touch with you regarding some of the hard parts.

To the orginal poster please take this info and think about it. I just looked at your pics and looked closly. 5 minutes per pic. There is nothing wrong with the out put shaft thats showing in the center of the trans and the matting surface for the gears on the end of the diff. I would stake my nuts on the trans being ok for know with that other diff. and the gears on the end of the diff. Those are not planet gears. The planets are in deeper in the trans. Year before last I went to kentucky to help a good friend run his trans shop and a 3100 gp came in with a weird noise and no 4th gear it had a bad diff and 4th coast clutch or the hub was bad. I personally changed it and to this day the car's still running. So to the op. Its up to you to install the diff. I know if it was my car i'd do it then have her towed to a shope and have the trans flushed and then drive her.

it's not the shaft's splines/teeth that are the issue. If you look at the outer ring gear, there are many teeth that are missing some material-- that's the problem. second, the planet gears that are being referred to are the ones in the diff... the center is the sun gear, then the small outer ones that are visible through the windows in the ouside of the diff are planet gears. not to say that these are the only ones in the trans, but that's what's being talked about.

The funny thing, he's right, you ought to see my differential now. Its pretty and shiny enough to even make Farnsworth jealous.

    Ouch!

That diff is trashed for sure. When you pulled the speed sensor out of the diff cover, and all that metal was stick to it, I knew it was more than a roll pin failure here.

I'd listen to trannyman, he knows his stuff. He was able to coach me through my drive chain switch, and ISS reluctor wheel that took a dump.

Yeah, Im prepping now to pull the tranny out. I just dont have any of the engine supports or a cherry picker. But if Im going to pull the tranny, I might as well pull the engine and replace the timing chain and do the valve train upgrades and maybe a few other odds and ends. No sense in wasting the opportunity.
