Once, about a year ago, it did this. I switched off the engine, restarted, and was not an issue until now.

I called one local shop, he said $75 for the scan, and if there is a problem, he takes the $75 off the total cost of repair (what's $75 after a $3000 repair).

Can I confirm that I am reading my dip stick correctly. I.E., when warm, the fluid should rise to the crisscrossed line on the atf dipstick?

Also, is it common to see some bubbles on your dipstick when warm, or is that a dead giveaway to an over/under fill?

Thanks guys, I appreciate the help, hopefully you can help me save a few bucks.
I went in today and had my 98 with 43K scanned. Came back with code 1811. Says will need a rebuild that the front pump is working incorrectly creating high line pressure, and high internal pressure. He gave me the option for a rebuild (2000), a low millage used tranny (1300), or new tranny (2700), or replace the pump (3-400). He said the problem with only replacing the pump is the friction plates between the gears are already sheared. I asked if I will cause any more damage, he said no the damage is done. I see a lot of people talking about pressure solenoids. Would this be a reasonable fix for my problem?

    Thank you,

    Ryan

Its true that low fluid level can be detrimental to any transmission. It depends on how long you drove it without realizing the fluid was low if would have caused your problem assuming your car shifted great before. Now about the hard shifting. I've had a similar problem in my 07 GT, It seems that my car shifts rather hard from first to second when I am making a turn. I slow down to make the turn and as I accellerate out of the turn it seems to shift rather thats the only time I notice it. Accellerating from a straight stop from a light or stop sign it shifts normally. There is pressure control Solenoid in these cars and they can be troublesome causing crappy shifting in the lower gears, also the factory shift points are soft to start with and long in duration which I don't like. You might want to ask around but you might want to have a new pressure solenoid installed and maybe a shift kit as well. Oh, long drives in hot ambient temperatures can sometimes affect shift quality. Don't let anyone talk you into a rebuild just yet though. Hope this helps.
Hi , i read your post and i have the same problem on my 05 Base , when i slow down but not stop and then i accelerate it shift really hard but never appen when i stop and accelerate .... so this problem can be cause by the " pressure control solenoid" ? And i have the hard shift problem on my 97 GTP ... mostly on a long ride or High outdoor temp. and slow shifting between all gear .... it is possible i have the same problem on my 97 and my 05 .... ??? tanks

Okay.. well update for me! I decided to do a coolant flush on my car to see if I was just running too hot on warm days and that was causing some hard shifting. I don't want to jinx it and the last couple weeks have been cooler now that summer is over; but i've driven over 1000 miles since the flush 4 weeks ago and haven't had a single harsh shift since. You might want to try a coolant flush on your 97 if its never been done before or hasn't been done in over 5 years. It may be as simple as that. However, it could still be the pressure control solenoid. It sounds on your 05 that its definitely not a simple fix like a coolant flush because it consistently happens under such precise conditions. I'd say scan both of the cars and look for the code if you are unsure.

ok on the 97 the flush have been made maybe a year ago but i didnt sure if he change the filter ..... and for the 05 it seem to be the solenoid, could i change it at house with no advanced tools? i have another problem (on 05)but i dont think is from the tranny... sometime when i brake from low speed to stop (like 5 mph to stop) the ABS come on .... rarely but sometime .... wierd!!

Yeah, I would say its the solenoids on both of them then. Definitely scan for the code before u replace anything. But, no you can't really easily change these things out at home w/o doing a crap load of work and essentially taking apart your tranny.. its a big pain in the a$$ from what i've heard, which is why a good shop will prolly charge you at least 4-500 bucks for the job.
