I cannot get the shaft to snap in over the compression ring. The passengers side went on in maybe a minute. I lubed the crap out of the driver side and tried having the ring pointed in different directions to no avail. Anyone have a trick to shock the compression ring and get it on there without screwing up the boot? I messed with the damn thing for close to an hour with no success.
Should I maybe try a new compression ring? If so, anyone know where I can get one? Maybe Dave will chime in
    Thanks,
    Andy

It is kind of a pain at times. I guess you could try putting a hose clamp over half of the ring. Then tighten it down. And slip the axle on. Other wise try hitting the end of the axle with the nut on with a 5 or 10 LB hammer lightly. Just make sure you have it ligned up and you should be good.

i have found that its more of a "shock" that gets those damn things to go in/out. Hit it with a hammer.

You're exactly right. If you're trying to push it in with your hands just give up now.

I was able to shove the passenger side back on by hand. So, I need to line up the whole halfshaft and hit it with a hammer? I thought of doing that but didn't want to screw up a joint or something. I still have the hub attached so I'll try that but I won't be able to till friday night when I go back to Fort Wayne again. I'm open to any other ideas. I did have one hell of a time getting it off, I just wish there was somewhere to use the slide hammer to knock it back on.
    Thanks guys.

if you cant get it on with the hub attached, take the cv axle off and try to line it up right and push it in that way. Its hard to say, but all the times they are different as far as how hard. Ive had some come right out with no effort and some of them you would swear there is something in the way, but no, it just needed tapped in. So its up to you, but be the judge, obviously taking a ten pounder to it with a full swing is not a good idea. Hope this helps.

Swapped mine out over the weekend. Had to pull the strut out and hit it with a hammer to get it to go in. Was overall pretty easy compared to other cars I have worked on.

Well guys I'm confused now. I can get it to go in and I think It's going over the compression clip but I can pull it back off by hand but it catches a little then comes off like it's compressing the clip. Should I be able to see any of the machined "shiny" part of the axle if it's all the way in? I can't remember how it was when I took it out. it's going in about 1 1/4" so it's gotta be compressing the clip. What do you guys think?

Alright well I pulled the compression clip off and it will not go in any farther than when the clip is on? Is the new seal maybe different so that's why all the machined "shiny" part of the axle isn't going into the trans? This is the last thing I have to do to fire up the car.

Well guys, I think I figured out my issues. I'm a dumbass and put the output shaft in backwards. One side has longer splines than the other correct?
