My 98' 3.8 GT has about 106k on it, and the trans. fluid has NEVER been changed due to an obviously careless previous owner.
I was going to change it, but people keep telling me that if I change it now after not being done for so long, it could actually damage my transmission.
Is this true? Or should I change it?

not at all, dont do a flush, that will "Shock" the system, just do a pan drop, replace the filter and the quarts lost usually like 8-10 quarts and drive off!

it wont "damage" anything, it just will be replacing the abrasive fluid that keeps your tranny shifting. you will be replacing with slippery new fluid, and that will cause the clutches inside to slip against each other. its never a good idea to change it if it hasnt had proper interval changes in its lifetime, i.e. every 30,000 miles or so.

here, read this. 4T65E Transmission Info

I miself, did a pan drop when i did my shift kit. I changed the filter and added amsoil atf. Best way is pan drop, change filter, then get it flushed, then throw good tranny fluid in it.
