B&M = CRAP!!! NEVER use it!!!! You might as well put Type F in your trans, well if you can even find it anymore lol. I have never been a Royal Purple guy either. I used to use a lot of Valvoline Durablend when it came out and was happy with how it worked but was very hard to find around here. Dexron 3 or 6 is plenty safe for anyone. There isnt much use to spend lots of $$$ on trans fluid and hope it is better than what you had and not really know. Use what works and you will be fine. Again keeping the trans temps in par is more important.
Scotty in responce to the NO OD until 140ish that is incorrect. The pcm will prevent lockup from coming on until the trans hits roughly 110 deg F though most vehicles vary a bit from that anymore but is close to follow. That is why on really cold days you notice the rpms seem to hang kinda high for a while and then drop down.

Hey Dave, what about TranSynd? It's the stuff that the Allison's in GM trucks use.

The place I buy my Royal Purple oil is a speed shop that opened in 1961. The guy I bought my last case of oil from said he likes the Royal Purple for the engine but uses Amsoil in his transmission. I wished I had more info other than his preference. He has an old muscle car so what he percieves as working well for him may not apply to you.

I was actually surprised, since many that go to the trouble of thinking about it that much seem to go with one brand for all, engine, tranny and differential. Eventhough he could get the RP tranny fluid at cost, his car preferred the Amsoil.

Well I could throw in some snide comment or something about the smart guy he is, but I'll leave it at that. I would be interested in the though process or experiences that took him to that point though.

Scotty, whenever you got time. I plan on having the tranny in the car in 2 weeks (weekend of 16,17). I'm doing a bunch of other things too once the tranny is in.

Why don't you tell me what to buy, i'll buy it (hopefully its all affordable), and i'll invite ya over to my house to show me what to do, what do ya think??? Hehehe, worth a shot!

Nah, whenever you get a chance, i'll take the pics you can get. Hopefully my FMHE won't be in the way (remember seeing my car?). I wouldn't mind a parts list though either if you got that handy.

I became an Amsoil dealer after using their products and liking them so much.

I don't have a trans oil cooler on my 04 CompG and use Amsoil ATF; the temps are the same as my 98 GTP that did have a GM cooler and used your regular Mr. Transmission ATF. The trans has a 3000 stall converter that those without an oil cooler have typically had heat issues with. Amsoil says to expect a drop in trans operating temperatures and thusfar I'm inclined to believe them, it was worth the money to protect a several thousand dollar investment.

Those that don't spring for Amsoil I normally refer to their local GM dealer and pick up some GM Dexron VI. In past I've also had good experiences with Pennzoil ATF.

Castrol synthetic ATF I had terrible experiences with, lots of slippage that was immediately cured with a fluid flush back to regular ATF.

Here is a link to it:
    Auxiliary Transmission Cooler Kit: PFYC

I'll have to dig up the instructions on how to put it in series with the existing tranny cooler in the radiator.

You will need a double flaring tool to make a lip on the hard lines so that the rubber lines dont come off easily. I would definitely recommend measuring twice and cut once because there isnt a lot of tranny line to play with.

I do remember seeing your car, at Kents I believe. You had the modified 1.9 rockers if I remember correctly.

anyone else play with the low visc John Deere Hy-Gard or
Case Hy-Trans fluid in their tranny's?

we use it in the TH400 i built in my Nova i heard of it from more than a few others running braked 400's/PG's and it sure helped stabilize our 60' times at a 50/50 mix.
we have a new 9" coan going in and i'm certainly interested in how it does at that point...i may start out with reg dino juice dex/merc and switch over just to see any changes...

shoot for what i got the 5 gal pail for (58$) i'd use it in everything lol

Unfortunately, I have never tried anything other than regular ATF. Though Trannyman has me piqued in looking to see what else would perhaps work better. I have access to thicker ATF fluilds, a TransSynd type fluid and others.

Ive never even considered anything John Deere or Case though. I dont think I would have made that connection. John Deere, Pontiac......John Deere, Pontiac. Nope I just would have never went down that road without someone suggesting it.

I was interested at the time he mentioned it and his reasoning. It's been a while and although I remember his preference the reason why escapes me. This is one of those things where 100 people surveyed will love and hate the same fluid. The clear cut winner seems more to be an individual thing.

Edit: I just got an email back from the shop. He is an Amsoil dealer but uses RP engine oil and something called Redline (?) in his tranny.

    j/k

If I weren't using Daves tranny fluid I would opt for the Amsoil tranny fluid.

The problem with such a survey is that people rarely can give you valid reasons for why they love/hate a particular fluid outside of things like "It worked for me", "I never had a problem", "Thats what so and so uses" and on and on.

I remember when I first got interested in this subject probably back in the very early 90's that I would ask people after they told me "This is all I ever use" why they say that. The blank stares were priceless.
