History: bought car 200,000 miles 08 3.8 NA GP did not move. dropped pan and fluid and magnet very dirty no metal. Thought what the hell new filter and give it a go. Car now moves and drives all gears and overdrive work fine. Been driving for 1,000 miles.

I am assuming this has a bad bearing in the channel plate/drive sprockets. 2nd and third input pistons and seals in the input drum are worn out. Also needs new clutches from material that plugged transmission filter? Who knows maybe it went 200,000mi without ever having fluid changed.

    Current symptoms:

Makes a grinding scraping noise SOMETIMES while idling hot in park or neutral. Noise sounds like from front cover transmission. A mechanic stethoscope on front cover does not sound like it is inside the transmission very strange. Noise goes away if you put it in any gear beside P or N.

Car shifts quick and fast when cold. Best way to describe is it seems to shift early and faster (earlier) than normal.

If you are coasting at say 55mph and shift the car into neutral to coast it will feel like it downshifts to 3rd for a quick second and then goes to neutral fine. This is 100% repeatable and does it every time.

I bought this car just to fix it and sell it but since it is running and driving seems like a waste to replace/rebuild until symptoms get more severe. My dilema is I don't want to sell it if it is going to go out in another 500miles.

Looking for past experience with similar issues with a plugged filter causing the car not to move. Anyone have this happen to them before and continue to drive the car for a few more years? Or did it blew up after 500 miles?

I did not drive it nice for the last 1000 miles lots of WOT figuring if she was gonna let go it would happen right away and then I would swap in a new trans. This thing just keeps working. If the body had less rust I would probably just throw another trans in it but it does have some rust by the rear trailing arms and rockers.

What would you do? Curious to see some of the replies.

    Thanks for any input.

I took it out and rebuilt it did not want to sell to anyone with issues. It was the drive sprocket support bearing assembly making the grinding noise when cold. 2nd clutches were wasted and dome shaped. 2nd piston was very loose. Input clutch housing lip seals and piston were also very loose. Surprised this car actually moved and didn't slip.
