So as you all know I replaced my CV shafts last week.

My transmission has always had a clunk when shifting between drive and reverse. I'm guessing that's somewhat normal given I have had the car since low miles (33k), plus my previous vehicle with a 4t60e also did it until I got rid of it at 170k miles.

But with the new CV shafts in, I hear a secondary clunk, which seems to come from the CV shaft itself. It's loudest on the drivers side shaft and doesn't happen with every shift. So it's something like this:

Shift between D and R or R and D -> Trans engage clunk -> CV shaft clunk -> *Sometimes* another clunk from either side when pulling off

However beyond this the shafts are quiet rolling in both directions and when turning.

The new shafts do have similar, minor in and out play, as well as minor rotational play at the inner CV "cup" part where they sit into the transmission. Maybe it's just this minor play making these noises?

I used CarQuest/Advance Auto new CV shafts. Yes, I know not OEM, but kind of hard to put $400 into a car that isn't worth more than a grand when the alternatives are around $110.

ever change the lower engine tranny mounts? if the engine is moving more then 2 inches when shifting in and of d to r. that could be the clunk.

could also be a bad sub frame bushing or lca.

Should have put that in my post. Both bottom mounts replaced around 2 years/25k miles ago.

Also LCAs are new under a year ago.

it leak oil down on the engine mount? oil kills the mount and it falls apart.

Nah, I just replaced them because of age. The car sat for awhile so they were just sad from non use.

However the old CV shafts were spraying their grease on them when the inner bands started to leak. Maybe they F'd the new ones up?

How bad are the upper mounts? Have a friend shift back and forth while you watch....likely you'll be amazed at what you see
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

I have not checked the upper mounts. Will do that as soon as I have a chance and report back. I might just go ahead and flip them.
