Thread: Help!! Tranny leaking fluid

Just changed out my cv axles today.. when i pulled the axles out of the tranny it leaked transmission fluid while the axles were out. I'm told that's common.. my problem is that I put the driver's side axle in no problem... I put in the pass. side axle no problem.. but after i was done i took the car out for a test drive. now i'm losing tranny fluid on the right side. I have looked at the axle, don't see any fluid on the axle, or coming out of the tranny where the axle slides in. any ideas where It could be coming from? i'm planning on pulling the axle out tomorrow and seeing if I can see anything wrong.. any help would be GREAT!!


and on the test drive the car rides great.. no there seem to be no problems w/ the axles themselves.. but I had to drive back home from my buddies house where I did the swap and it's about a 30 mile drive.. I lost about a quart/ quart and a half on the trip home. thanks for the help guys

I'm sure Dave will chin=me in soon. He's pretty busy right now. Were the clips on the end of the axle? I'm sure there is some kind of o-ring or something to seal it but i could be wrong.

The only thing that is coming to mind for me is the differential housing axle seal. Perhaps that has went bad or was damaged. Ive hear Dave before say that you could possibly knock out the round spring tensioner of the axle seal and that would cause it to not seal around the axle properly.

any ideas on how to replace that or to see if it's broken?

The clip was on the end of the axle when i put it in.. I haven 't the clip sitting on the cement anywhere around where the car was. i'm just gonna pull the axle back out today and see if i see anything wrong. if not i guess i'll just reinstall it and see if it seals up better this time. thanks for the help guys. let you know whats up in about an hour

I checked my fluids after the install and re-filled; but you were right TMAN. it was leaking only when in turns and in motion.. it was the cv axles.. the right one popped back out on the initial test drive (even though i double checked both axles before bolting everything back up) I reinstalled the RT cv axle.. it has been fine since Sunday. but on Tuesday the LT axle popped out on the way to work and started to leak. fixed it once I got to work and both have been fine since. thanks for the help guys.
