I am looking at a 2005 GXP that has 145,000 miles. The owner said one day it quit moving, they took it to a shop and where told it needs a new trans. Is really clean, and I can get it for under $2000.
Even if I replace the trans I think I can come out ok on it. Is there an input shaft that can fail on these? How about the differential ? I will be looking at it today and will bring a Snap on MODIS to check for codes and do some tests. Havent been inside a auto trans for a long time but I am confident I could rebuild this one if needed.
I got a 98 GTP Daytona edition with a blown motor for my son a few years ago, we just bought a 2006 GT for us to drive around after our 2013 Chrysler 200 was totaled, now looking at GP #3. My first car was a 1967 GP, my daughters was a 2002 GP SE (totaled)my sons was the 98 GTP, so the GP roots run deep

4T65 can fail in just about every way...input shaft, snapped chain, broken diff, to just plain wore out...you name it.

IF everything checks out, $2k is a steal.

Even if the trans needs rebuilt and you need to put lifters in the thing from DOD probably being active it's entire life; that's worth it. You could stuff $2k~ in the car and sell it for probably 7-8, easy.

FYI, they stop moving once fluid is about a half gallon low. What's the dipstick look like?

Put it in gear and starts to move, quits when warm. It's black and durty so it's hard to tell what it will be like cleaned up. Looks like some scratches though. Shure sounded nice when I started it up!

Fluid looked and smelled good, about the correct level for being cold. If it was any other color than black I would be on it for sure. I did have a small dent rear quarter.

It's a lot easier to flip GXPs with replaced transmissions/tranny work than it is V6 GPs. Seems people aren't as wary because it's so common on GXPs.

Black is the easiest color to do spot repairs at home with. I'd be more wary of the trans than the exterior color. Now if the trans fluid was black, yeah thats toast.

I forgot to mention that there was a whine coming from the torque converter area, sounded like the pump.

Under 2 grand is a great deal, either to fix and drive or flip.

I offered $1500, they countered $1800. If it was any color other than black I would take it. There is just too meny scratches that will not wax or buff out. Tires are about shot, wheels are pitted in places, just too much that needs to be done to get it to where I would be happy. To be honest, I would rather have a V8, manual trans, RWD car.

If it was rust free it would be worth it to flip it.

You could still clean it up really good and make it run nice with a rebuilt transmission. Find some used tires or something. I bet it could still sell for $5,000-6,000, but you'd be into it for atleast 3500-4000 if you rebuilt it yourself.
