I may be able to jump on a used 284 cheap. What are some of the things to look out for?
For example: Cracked case? deal-breaker.
metal shavings in oil?
Keeping in mind that a 20-yr old tranny is going to show signs of wear of course.

Cracked case? Maybe? But couldl still be used for parts. A good check is to lift up on the CV cup on the trans and see if the other one moves much. It will move some but it shouldn't have allot of play. Check out Rodney Dickmans web page on transmissions. There is also an external bearing that works well for the axles.
TRY:
Rodney Dickman's Automotive Accessories
or fastfieros of Dallas
He knows allot of info on Getrag transmissions.
I've been planning a swap since February lol... But you know how these things go. I was about ready to throw in the towel on the idea until today. I'll see how it goes, for less than junkyard price I'll either get lucky or get what I paid for.
Kuntzie lives around here so if anything I may be needing his help, that is if he isn't too busy with his T76 monstrosity.
i have 5 284s currently
check the DS output shaft, it should be a male end (so the axles would be female splined) if its not its missing the stub shaft and those things are like the gold on top of gold, and useless without them (they pop out with the axles sometimes)
i only have 2 stub shafts for my 5 transmissions.
What kind of cars come with the 284? Im in search of a donor car
