    Hello everyone,
In France, we do not have the culture of automatic gearboxes.
It's very hard to find a professional to fix them, and when you find one, he asks for the price of the car.
Many do not know how to get back an American gearbox, and it happens that we get the car on one side and the parts on the

    other ...

My problem is the 3 and 4 skate.
If I roll slowly, all gears pass, but if I press a little on the accelerator or if I climb a slope, or too much weight, 3 and 4 skate.
The speeds go down well, the level is good, the color starts to turn slightly brown, and a smell starts to feel, but not too much.
There were no precedents before this problem, it came at once, I entered a highway, I downgraded from 4 to 3, and it skates

    since.
I had to do 15 km since this problem.
Arrived in town, I put the second (forced), and more skating problem.

The mechanics I know can not tell me if I have a mechanical problem, or if it is an electrical part to change.
The problem exists both cold and hot.
I have an appointment to change the oil and the filter, and put a special fluid before, to clean the box (I believe in luck

    ??)
In France, many American cars end up in the trash because of gearbox problems (except for more expensive cars).

I see the last post on the same car as me and has a gearbox problem, and ... nobody answered ... it scares me a lot, because

when you have in France, an American car and do not have too much money, we feel very lonely ...
(help me obi wan kenobi you're my only hope )

Thank you for this future help

    (Pontiac Grand Prix 3.1L with, I think, a 4T60 (1/2/D/D), 77000 miles)

if the tranny fluid is dark and smells burnt, its time for a rebuild. sounds like its pretty well used up.

"if the tranny fluid is dark and smells burnt, its time for a rebuild."
I guess you're right, but as it happened all at once, and for two speeds (3 and 4), could that be something else?
    I 'll post oil photo

the 4 th gear hub is likely shot, its splines wear off and then it hardly holds overdrive if at all.

Financially, it would be terrible to redo the gearbox ...
Here we have lot of Pontiac Trans Sport.
    I think I saw, 3.8L models have 4t60?
If this is confirmed, is it easy to interchange?

dont think they are easily swapped. might be electrical differences.

What you have is the 4t60, with electronic torque converter lockup. Your transmission shifts on its own without input from the computer, except for torque converter lockup. Definitely sounds like it needs a rebuild unfortunately. If that's not an option, a transmission from a w-body car, which are grand prix, regal, lumina, and cutlass supreme from 90 to 93 sound work. 94 and up went to the 4t60-e, which will not work as it needs the computer to command gear changes.

    Thank you for this information.
I was wondering the difference between the 4T60 and the 4T60-E.
    It's very interesting.
