Trunk doesn't hinge correctly

Has anyone ran into this problem? I'm not 100% sure new hinges will fix it, but the trunk lid goes too far when I open it; I'm kinda afraid for my back windshield. The struts are brand new, and the lid doesn't meet with the rest of the body when closed. I can't tell what's missing.

This was going on with the old struts too actually. The clips broke off of them, but they still extended to the length that the lid goes to. They are tossed now, but I verified the part number of the new ones.
 
take the struts off and close the trunk. if the trunk isnt aligned, ya need to adjust the hinges.
get us some pics of the trunk open and of the hinges.
