    Hi,

I just got some new winter tires, and they are already 5 years old, stored in a warehouse, they have the lines and all, I looked up online and the tire sales said they are fine for 4-5 seasons, is this so?

    Thanks

as long as they dont have dry rot. run em. look be tween the treads too. not just the sidewalls.

Tires do tend to break down after around six years, but due to how they were stored, that might give them more life. I agree with Scotty. Hope they were cheap!

Does rubber break down? Yes. Is it as big of an issue as people try to make it out to be? No.

There was a report on Dateline several years ago about old tires and it was nothing more than propaganda to get people to spend money on tires. It sent the sheeple into a hysteria because they showed graphics of tire treads laying on the side of the road. The bad part is the treads were all from recapped big rig tires.

When I got my GP the tires were the original from the factory with only 30,000 miles on them (the car sat in a garage and was hardly driven). However they were 16 years old. While they looked great at first glance, close examination showed extreme dry rotting between the treading. Luckily I had noticed and got them replaced in a timely fashion. I would look over them well and if there aren't any signs of dry rot you should be good.

The not being used seems to be what gets to them. I am finally tossing a set of tires ive had for almost 15 years because they finally dry rotted. The key is that they need to be driven on. This set lasted an abnormally long time because I used them, then stored them, used them, stored them. If your tires aren't showing any cracking id use them. Most tires have an anti dry rot compound in the rubber but they must be driven to keep it fresh. Minor cracking isn't as big of a deal as people make AS LONG AS the tire is retaining the correct shape, i.e. when you look at the treads they are flat and not bowing out anywhere. If they are bowing out at all then throw them cuz the cords are coming apart.
