I work 60+ hours a week on night shift and last year Columbia Gas sent me a notice saying they had to inspect my interior gas lines and the only time they were available was during my scarce sleep time. So after a few phone calls, they finally caved and scheduled an inspector to come in at 7am Saturday morning, when I can afford to lose some sleep.

It was a major ****ing pain. They checked my water heater, furnace, meter, and every shutoff knob and determined I needed a new meter, that took 4 hours to install. By the time they were finished, it was noon and Mom was on her way over with her truck so I could cash in my years worth of beer cans. Went to the recycling center, out to lunch, came home and intended on passing out.

But I came home and the kitchen was flooded! The ****, while doing the inspection on the shut off valves, had opened the water line going to the ice maker on the fridge, that WASN'T HOOKED UP ANYMORE. Kitchen floor was soaked but didn't make it into the living room, except the drop ceiling in the basement was ruined but whatever, I wanted to tear it out anyway. Closed the valve, tore out a bunch of ceiling tiles, and kicked myself for not keeping a closer eye on her but whatever, one inspection in almost 10 years, I'll deal with it.

Went to take a shower after tearing up the ceiling and the water was EXTREMELY, PAINFULLY hot. I've lived here a long time, I know where to turn my knobs. Go back into the basement and the water heater thermostat is cranked all the way to the hottest setting. Are you ****ing kidding me? That was part of your checks too?

Fast forward one year, get a letter saying they need to inspect my lines again. Really? No. **** you, no. Nope, **** you, **** off.

They finally send me a letter saying if they can't inspect my lines, they will have to shut off my gas. Yup. DO IT. I have an electric hot water heater waiting to be installed, it's summer so I have 3-4 months to convert my furnace. Go ahead, do it.

Come home from a 13 hour shift where NOTHING went right today and there is a notice saying they shut my gas off. HaHaHa so ****ing what? Cold shower wasn't so bad, it's 80 degrees out.

But the notice says they are going to dig up and remove their gas lines going from the street to my house because of it. SO WHAT?

The gas line literally runs underneath the magnolia tree my late grandfather and father planted when my grandmother died, when my dad was 12.

Columbia Gas is going to kill a 48 year old magnolia tree that means a great deal to my family, because they couldn't re-inspect a one year old gas meter that they installed.

    ****.

and no way they are digging my yard up either with out a court order. they can cut the line at the curb. or leave it there.

Inspections? What kind of nazi pinko BS is that? I have a gas water heater, stove, and furnace (you know it gets so cold down here). We've lived in this house for 10 years and before we had a house that was a rental and when the gas company came out he had to inspect the water heater and made the landlord raise it 18" off the floor. I have never heard of any kind of inspection like that before where they jack with your stuff. That's crazy.

damn , i'd have had the video camera out recording my flooded ****. then i'd have called them to see how they were gonna rectify the situation and if i wasn't satisfied , call a lawyer. water damage is always followed by mold. call one of those news channels that love to harass businesses. they hate bad press.

Never heard of gas inspections in my life. As far as I am aware your meter is yours anything after is MINE. If not then I would request new gas lines if they have surface rust on them because I would "fear my life" for the integrity of the pipes and they pay out of their pocket!

I couldnt imagine the electric company doing this, the holes!

I live in Ohio and never heard of inspections from C.Gas either. I bet it was a false front, most likely they were in your room sniffing your boxers. Most likely...

The only time I have and another issue was when the pipe where it enters the meter had been eaten away from the yard people and time. We ended up having them come out because I could see the gas coming out it was so bad and I could smell it in the front yard. We ended up for 2 days without gas because they had to move the meter and dig up the old line then told the landlord that he was responsible for everything after the meter and they were responsible for everything up to the meter. But anything in the house is the homeowners responsibility around here.

Hopefully you have pictures and such to go after them even if you go after them in small claims court chances are they won't show up and you will end up with a default judgment. We had an electric company drop a 2,200volt line on the ground and it went through a chain link fence like a lightsaber it blew out about half the appliances in my friends house and he sued them in small claims court and no one showed up he had pics of the crew working the damage to the fence and all that and ended up getting 10K since the judge decided it was 2 different incidences because the wire had hit their home wiring first and then the fence and no one showed up. If took him about 6 months to collect but he got his money.

Yes, everything I've read indicates they are doing it because I'm not using enough gas and they suspect meter tampering.

I have a stone tile kitchen floor, and the ice maker water line is only like 1/4" so it only took a mop to clean up, and I had already started pulling the tiles out of other rooms in the basement so I was just glad things weren't worse.

Did they actually tell you they suspect meter tampering? Did you tell them you work 60+ hrs a week therefore you aren't home most of the time?

generally they think the meter is faulty when usage is so low. then they want to see the meter and check it out. and see the gas line is not tapped before the meter.

That actually happened down the street from my old job. The electric company noticed that the house was using massive amounts of energy and went to check it out. The homeowners refused to let the tech inside so he left. Couple hours later the cops raided the house and there was tons of weed in the basement lol.
