Heading home from work the other day my 3t40 just quit working I took off from a stop and the shift into 2nd was delayed but then it just slipped no movement at all in any gear or reverse I checked the fluid and its full. My service manual is kind of vauge on the pressure check port, the one I used is on top of trans next to the T.V.cable and I got 0 PSI. I also loosend a cooler line and got the same thing. Its a 1993 with 141k so I'm wondering is there anything common with this problem that I can check and repair without pulling the trans? Or is it just time to let it go? Thanks in advance for any info/help

I have never seen a grand prix with a 3 speed trans in it, is it a different car or do you have an OD transmission? Either way if you have 0 line pressure and nothing coming out of the cooler line then it going to need some internal repair. Your trans fluid level should be way over the full mark if you have no pressure, because no pressure means the pump isnt moving anything. Generally when this happens the pump shaft has worn its splines off of the converter end of the shaft, the shaft broke, or the splined area inside the torque converter is damaged. If the pump shaft doesnt spin then there is no pressure. It this is the 3 speed transmission I have seen a few of them have pumps that grenaded. Since you did have some movement and then nothing at all I would lean towards a stripped shaft or pump that is bad given that you dont have any pressure.

Thanks, you are right it is an olds cutlass. But i do have a 1964 Grand Prix and your right it has a 4 speed muncie that I can fix! I have been a mechanic for over 20 years but have never had the chance to learn how rebuild auto trannys.I had a guy I worked with start showing me but he passed away rather unexpectedly,so I know enough to get me in trouble. I just wanted to know if I was using the right port to check the pressure and this is the only forum I found with somebody that takes the time to help other people out with their knowledge!! Thanks again

Well, with that classic GP I hope you find this place enjoyable enough to come back often as I sure would enjoy having you here.
