you used plastic lim gaskets...replace with metal ones. it looks blown out.

you might have put that there but it also could have happened from sitting, cant be a head gasket, no way for it to push it on top of the valve, unless the head is cracked.

Yeah when I saw the plastic gaskets I suddenly remembered installing them, thinking I'd have got rid of the car by now. I originally had metal ones that I installed when I first got the car, but a month later I stuck the blower on and used plastic.

I'm pulling the heads now. That loose valve stem I couldn't let slide. So I'll check them over and get a quote to install bronze guides if needed. Perhaps a couple upgrades. But who knows, I might find a toasted piston.

the spark plug would have been smashed if the piston chipped.

How was the seat of the pants experience when you installed rockers?

they were my first mod i installed. the car felt better cause they killed 5 of my 8º's of KR, id drop a cam in it vs rockers if i was do it over again.

I might go that route. I'm thinking of pulling the engine now. I have to sooner than later do the oil pan gasket, and possibly the rear cover gasket. If I decide to, it's gonna be a long project. Daughter goes in Tuesday for braces, so my mod funds are gonna dry up for awhile. But if I do cam I need to consider a tranny rebuild. Crap, what have I gotten myself into. I'm almost hoping I find a melted piston...

You found the modding rabbit hole, lol. I started down that road with my GPGT and then reality set in and I made a plan to mod it and am sticking to it. I know what needs to be bought/upgraded and the $$ it will take and that's where it stops. Once it's together and running good I'll let it ride and enjoy it for what it is.

All that matters is that I enjoy it when it's done

    Valve wiggle wiggle - YouTube

Short vid showing how much movement is in the valves. Head gasket was fine. I know that the chances of it failing were slim, but I had to know. Obviously I screwed up the valve seal install. If I use this head I'll replace all of them. Wonder what the tolerance is for valve wiggle.

I think you should take the heads to the machine shop and get a multi angle valve job done. and while they are there, get them machined so you can run an xpz cam.

seems like a lot of wiggle to me.. pull the valve out, check the stem for wear.

Ya, I agree. Gonna pull the other head and take them to the machine shop. I could pick up another set at the yard, but I've got so much time and money in these I gotta find out if they are worth fixing. Are there gains to be had with bigger valves, without rocker/cam?

With all the slop in them, I'm surprised they haven't touched.

when I went smaller than 2.8 on the gen 3, I didn't notice much more power. doing rockers and a cam will necessitate measuring pushrod's.

Alright, cool. So if the heads check out and don't brake the bank, I'm thinking VS cam (because it's much cheaper since I don't have to do chain, big springs, oil pump cover etc) and I'll dial it in on the Gen 3. Then later I can do Gen V when I find a nice one.

The VS cam is nice. not too lopey, but really good midrange torque. On a goodsetup (VS, 3" pulley, intercooled, headers, and tune) you'll put down 300 whp and run low 13's high 12's all day long.

you can get a good used gen 5 for like 125 bucks off LKQOnline I would also do a northstar throttle body and LQ4 maf at the same time.

gen 5 swap ran me about 400 bucks in all, 117 shipped for the blower, 30 for a used N*, 50 for a maf, n* to gen 5 adapter plate and pig tail 130, 15-20 iirc for the blower bolts for the ic and gen 5, then like 90 for the 4 inch intake tube couplers and new filter.

then i sold my gen 3 belt wrap for 125 and bought one for the gen 5 for 150. so 25 more lol it adds up fast.
