I actually got quite a bit done today, starting with getting rid of the old fluorescent bulbs and getting some LEDs in the shop. BIG difference there. I went through and cleaned all the internals and gave it all a transmission fluid bath afterwards That stuff was pretty dirty. A long time ago I drove to Joplin and picked up a parts transmission from a 06 GTP. It worked at removal, and had 130k on it when the engine died. Transmission worked when it was pulled. I ended up using the diff, diff housing, input\third drum, and ratcheting sprags from that transmission. Once I got all the main internals cleaned up, I went ahead and pulled apart the 2-1 Manual Servo and the 1-2\3-4 accumulators along with the tubing and cleaned all it out. The accumulator housing were a bit dirty, but nothing too bad. With everything out, I went ahead and threw the case in the back of the truck and pressure washed it at the car wash. Only thing I really have to clean before it's ready for assembly will be the VB\CP and thrust bearings. For the bearings, I'll probably take them to work and run them through a parts washer or something. The VB isn't too bad, so I think the worst is behind me. Dad's coming down tomorrow, so I'll probably clean the 2 thrust bearings by hand tonight needed to put the diff in so we can put it in tomorrow. Who knows, it's been a long day. Pics!
Bucket of parts and fluid, I went through each and cleaned them as best as a could without removing the seals. I don't have any of those damned J tools to do it:

Acuumulators all put back in, still need to torque the bolts, though:

    Various case pics:

That's about it. Nothing overly exciting, but a lot of work, lol.

IV never seen anyone run dual chains with high power. 7/8 may stretch as a warning, would love to see the snapping point of the dual chain.

Well, I'd like to make that much power, but with no e85 around here, not seeing that happening with my budget, lol. I did get the diff put in today, along with bolting the trans down to the bench for further assembly. I didn't check the end play in the diff, but I will when I have access to my dial indicator. I'm basically at a stand still until stuff gets here (and soaks overnight), I just need to find out which forward band I need to use. I have 2, a brown one and a grey\black one. I think the grey\black one is the HE version, but I'd like to make sure before I put it altogether. There's a rumor around work saying we'll be off Thursday and Friday this week, which I doubt is true. If it is true, there's a god chance this trans will be going in this weekend. I guess we'll just have to see. I have some pics at home, but nothing crazy. I'll upload them at some point.

Well made a lot of progress, but it's not done. Everything went pretty smooth, until the 2nd gear stack. Here's some pics:
Reaction drums, forward\manual 1-2 band installed, along with all the planetaries. Hard to see in this particular pic, but the reaction drum isn't full seated, so I had to pull it all back out after this pic:

For the third stack, I took an old out splined friction, sanded off the friction material, then put it on the bottom (on top of the wave plate) to tighten up the stack. Here's the "shim"

    And it measuring at .043"

For the input stack, I'm using TEP 5 friciton setup with no waveplate, and it measured at .048" but I didn't get a pic of it. Mainly because I checked it without 3rd applied, and then also WITH third applied to see if 3rd would make the input stack drag. .040" with third applied, so I'm good on that end. It just took too many hands to apply air, measure, etc. So, no pic of that.
Here's a pic of the ratcheting sprags installed...right before I removed them again. to install the input\third drum again. I had it out 5 or 6 times yesterday for various reasons. In this case, to change the selective washer on the driven gear support. I ended up going with a blue washer, which puts me right at .007" (spec is .006-.012").

Then it gets depressing. I was putting together the 2nd gear stack, and it's either WAY too loose, or WAY too tight. .110" or (a VERY TIGHT) .018". I'm going to have to order 2 .090" steels to replace 2 stock .067" steels to tighten up the stack. It sucks, but I'd rather do it right the first time. Here's a pic of the 2nd gear stack with the larger gap (.110")

    It's HUGE.
Anyways, this is how it is going to set for a few days until more parts get here. Made a lot of progress, but it's not done yet!

If i can find a good deal on a ZZP pump shaft, I might pic one of those up, but meh. I'm going to take the side cover down to the car wash and pressure wash it, but that's probably the bulk of what will happen for now!

Great progress so far and totally agree I would take the time to make sure everything is good the first time. But I would be so lost to do this myself. I give it to you for taking it on.

Thanks, this is my second time "building" a trans in this car. 4 (I think?) years ago I picked up a modified VB\CP and a junkyard trans, then went through everything I could in that trans, restacking frictions to tighter tolerances, all that jazz. I wanted to do it with used parts before I paid out for new parts and better parts. That trans is still in the car and working great, I actually sold it to my friend who will change it to 3.29s and put it in his 97 GTP. I did go a bit further into this one though, checking engagement on each friction stack, cleaning everything (that I could) in a parts washer, checking endplay, etc. Hopefully it'll shift better than the current trans, which still shifts fine, honestly.

In other news, a Dorman pan, new Delco pump shaft, 2 .090" steels for the 2nd gear stack, and a roll over header wrap will be here before the week's end. I'm wrapping the flex pipe to see if a "clicking" type noise is coming from it. I also got news that we might be working the next 4 Saturdays, which would give me 66 hour weeks for the next month, with literally having a 37 hour weekend. Needless to say, if that's true, not sure when this thing will end up in the car, lol.

Some of the final pieces got here today. Dad is coming down, so I'll probably wait til he gets here to button everything up. All that's left at this point is the TC and side cover gasket. At some point I might be able to actually install it, too.

Done and done. All I have left is a side cover gasket and a TC. I'll be pressure washing the side cover I have tomorrow. The axles seals appear to be fine, and the were not leaking when they were installed in the other car so I'll leave them. If they leak it's not too hard to change. Everything went pretty easy on the rest of the assembly, 2nd gear is now at .040", total end play is right at .007", all appears to be well. The new chains were WAY tighter than was in the 05 trans I tore down. Here's some pics:
Just after putting in the 2nd gear, thrust washers, and driven gear support:

    With chains:

Measuring slack, I used the caliper to measure the case's thickness, and zero'd it out there:

    New filter, of course:

The rest is history. I do have the pan torqued down, but I that I'd be pulling the magnets out of my current trans to put in there so it'll be coming back off:

Not sure when the install will be happening, hopefully soon!
