So I'm in the process of changing my tranny fluid but I am not seeing dex/merc lll which is recomended for my car. Valvoline has dex,/merc for cars with the use of 2 3 and 6. But Auto Zone didn't sell valvoline and I had already purchased castrol dex/merc but it says for use of 2005 and prior gm vehicles but not applications calling for dex Vl. I'm confused because valvoline says 2 3 &6 but castrol says don't use in cars with dex 6. My car says use dex 3 but ppl are telling me I need Vl but my tranny is a bit worn. Someone please help.

Use the dex/merc 3, dexron 6 is for 2005.5ish and up cars.

The brand doesnt matter, so use that castrol fluid you bought.

Just put Dex6 in this weekend. No problems so far.... I know alot of people on here, including Dave at Triple Edge Performance, recommend Dex/Merc 3 for our used 97-03 trans. Especially those old, worn ones. Last thing you need is to clean out the existing gunk thats holding the trans together lol

I'm in that same boat. I will typically grab the cheap store brand Dex 3 for most stuff. If installing a new transmission, sure Dex 6. And Walmart brand for that one. Our transmissions weren't originally designed for super duper fluid. Makes it cheaper to maintain them.

I like to peform a pan drop service (filter and 7-8 quarts of fluid) every 30K or a year.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

I also am doing a pan drop soon and want to know where to find straight Dex III. No dex/merc, or does it matter?
Inconclusive auto parts store searches for "Dexron III": They all are either dex VI or a "multipurpose fluid"
Advance Auto Parts: Search Results for dexron iii
Search: dexron III | Transmission Fluid | AutoZone.com
List: Search for 'dexron iii' | O'Reilly Auto Parts
