Tranny Coolers-

Did some research on tranny coolers and ZZP does not recommend them at all. They quote them rather dangerous than safe. They say that the 4T65e trannys don't have a problem with heat and a lot of people don't realize that. My question is, is it a mod worth the money.? I mean my stupid tranny only slips/shifts hard in the heat so that would make me think that its getting too hot! Has anyone ever installed one? What were the results if so? And why is ZZP saying the 4t65e trannys don't have a heating issue but*people*with this tranny are having the same symptoms in the heat?

Usually these transmissions don't get to bad with the 3.8. Its people with the 5.3L that have all the extreme heat problems and have to add a cooler. Do u know what temps your tranny runs at?

your tranny is on its way out if it slips when the trans is hot, hotter it gets the thinner the fluid gets. aka clutches are worn out.

have you done a trans service yet? hows the fluid look? add any lucas to the tranny?

I don't know exactly what temp it runs at but its gets hot when I'm sitting in traffic. When I checked the fluid it was dark brown and smelled sour. I changed it 15k miles ago and added 2 bottles of Lucas in between the 15k miles. And it only slips at wot from 2-3.

Fluid is Brown and smells burnt. Will the shift kit help my tranny at all with slippage? Added 2 bottles of Lucas already.

sounds like its on its last legs. burnt fluid is no good, and after 2 bottles of lucas, and its not helping any more. times up.

yo could try a pan drop and filter change, and another qt of lucas. but its a crap shoot at best how much longer it will last.

I want to make this tranny last as long as possible. It seem to do fine when driving normal(except when hot outside and it starts shifting hard) so will a fluid/filter change, shift kit, and a tranny cooler extend the life of it?

your filter could be clogged up and causing some of this. be warned tho, with bad burnt up fluid and slipping, even a pan drop is a risk if you ask me.

if you do drop the pan, i'd think you got a 50/50 shot its still working right after the service. it could just no longer work. or it may work just fine. you never know when its in the condition your is in.

Yes and no more Lucas just dex6 never flush the trans either

dex 6 is thinner,( not what you want now) and we dont know your year car, 6 is for the newer trannys. id stick to dex 3 if your 97-03

if you dump the pan, id add another quart of lucas as well. with 6 qts of new tranny fluid. should take about 7 qts to refill it in total.

AND DONT FLUSH IT! that would be a death sentence for sure.

Dex6? On my dip stick it says use dex3 only. What is dex6?

Dex 6 is a retro Scotty all dex 3 trans can use it. Did the same in my 97 you can always search as well but hands down dex 6 is a better fluid regardless of fluid condition the same would happen with dex 3 if you put clean fluid in the same could happen. Here's a link BTW. Dexron VI (6)??????

dex 6 is the newest grade of fluid. its for newer cars.

like i said, its a risk. 50/50 shot. maybe best to milk it along and save up for a jy tranny or used one off craigslist from a part out or something. rebuilds cost a lot. 1500 to 2000 most of the time.

from info posted here, its best to keep the dex 3 in a old trans being serviced. dex 6 works, but it is thinner. last thing you want is fluid thats thinner in a old worn out tranny.

if the older model trans is a fresh rebuild dex 6 is just fine to use.

So will the tranny cooler help at all because I'm dropping the pan tomorrow. I will install one if its gonna help with the temperatures.

it should lower your temps. if all else fails, you have a cooler for the new trans down the road.

Scott can you elaborate on this? When I had my tranny fluid serviced at Jiffy what do you think they did? A flush? Since my fluid change ive had no problems and I was thinking about servicing the tranny again as I am about there again mileage wise.
