Thread: OBD port not reading cig lighter fuse blows- brandon303000

Brandon, when you replace the fuse does it pop immediately, or only once you push the cig lighter in?

As soon as I push the CIG in it blows

Remove the fuse and leave it out, then grab some 120 grit sandpaper and clean the outer housing of the lighter port and try to get to the bottom part as well. Might be some corrosion in there. Then stick a new fuse in and try it again. Worst case, leave the lighter out and then install a new fuse for temp. That should allow the OBD port to work.

If cleaning the ligher port doesn't help, then it may be time to pull the lighter port out and check it/replace it. Sometimes the ground wire on the back can come loose/off.

OK I check the CIG fuse and yes it was no good put a new fuse in and it works I put a scanner on it and it works....now for the CIG part I didn't tell you that the one I have for it didn't come with the car so it might be why it blows the fuse

Good deal. At least the OBD port works now. As for the lighter, I'd go to a JY and find a stock one and stick it in your pocket. Worst case get a new one from a parts store and give it a try. I'd still make sure that the lighter port is free of corrosion/rust as well before sticking the new lighter in there. And no, don't install a larger rating fuse in it's place to keep it from blowing. You're just asking for trouble there. I've seen people do this in the past and it never ends well, lol.

Yes that is true it had a 10a but it calls for a 15a so now it has the right one...but I'm not really worried about the lighter....but man I really appreciate the help everyone I know I told them about the fuse being the hole problem and that was like what that don't make since and I was like yes it does cause it works now...but I'm trying to find some cheap power adder's if you know anything about that cause most of everything is controlled by the pcm .....but can you believe my 97 grand Prix has almost 200.000 miles on it and there are no codes I don't know if that's a bad thing or not
