I wasn't able to find an answer to this - basically, I know that the HV3 is a nice mod because it frees up some room around the intake runners but I was wondering, what would happen if you just ran without an intake insert at all? Would there be a huge drop in low end power/not big enough boost in top end to justify it?

The insert is there to smoothly direct air into the cylinders. The stock insert forms long swooping runners that allow air to reach a high velocity and ram into the cylinder like a cheap hooker with daddy issues. This is good for low end torque. Problem is that it also adds alot of plastic into the manifold that ends up restricting airflow at high rpms (One of the runners even obstructs the throttlebody). The HV3 is a compromise between nice short runners / high rpm power and long runners / low end grunt. Its a good upgrade in my book.

    James..
You need a steadier hand. Your hooker seems reasonably priced, what's that include. lol

I would just buy the HV3 but I can't justify spending almost $200 on a molded piece of plastic... Anyone know just how much I'd have to cut off the stock insert to get it to be HV3-ish?

Only problem I see with just cutting is that you still have tons of sharp turns and walls inside the plenum then which will effect flow.
