    Hey! I've got a 2000 GTP with 100,000 miles on it. The power steering has been making a whining sound for a little while now and the fluid is constantly leaking. I have tried to top up the fluid, use Lucas to seal and still the sound and leak continues. I'm pretty sure the pump is shot, so now the question is how to repair? I would like to avoid bringing to a mechanic, so does anyone know how easy this process is? The engine bay is so jammed I figure I have to remove some stuff, but any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

    Its a fairly simple process that can be done with a minimal tool set. After you undo the belts using the tensioner, remove the alternator and the coolant passage that sits below it. Then unbolt the power steering pump, disconnect the lines and do the reverse to put it all back together.

    remove the passenger side wheel too it makes it alot easier to alot of the work through the wheel well
    Open cone, SSAC headers, cat delete, 8.5 MSD wires, 3.4 zzp mps, 180*, 104's, ported blower, DHP canned tune, 19" XXR 962s, DNA springs.

    ^True.

    Don't forget new coolant elbows for that passage. YOU WILL Break the old ones. They are under $5 for the pair at autozone.

    Go to GPONA and log in (register if you haven't already). On the top it says service manual, its a copy of the GM service manual that they host and has great instructions for things like this as well as diagnostic info, etc.

    New or Remanufacured. Check out rock auto then google rock auto discount codes, you should be able to get one pretty cheap that way.

    The hoses are probably shot too, which may have been the cause for your fluid level to drop.

    The leak and drop in fluid level wouldn't be just from the pump? There's probably other issues as well?!

    Yes. Listen to mechguy. I'm going through the exact same thing as you are right now. And after changing the power-steering pump, I am in the process of finding the source of the leak because it wasn't the pump. Find the leak first, or have someone with a lift get it up in the air so they can maybe see it better, find and fix the leak before going through the expense of a new pump. May need one, but take it from me, changing the pump doesn't necessarily fix the leak. I got to get to work right now, but do that first, and I'll tell you the steps I used to get the pump changed if you need to. Everyone here was very helpful when I changed mine, so others may have good ideas for you as well.

    I think he's saying it would be a good time to replace the hoses too.

    If you're going to open the hydraulic circuit, might as well get it all up-to-date in one fell swoop.

    Thanks Quickster. Good to know you just went through the same thing. Did you end up fixing completely? I will prob take it to a garage this weekend to put on a hoist. I'm pretty sure its the pump though - the pool of fluid is right under the pump and when I went under it didn't seem to be leaking from the lines. The whining sound is so annoying I gotta resolve asap. Also the burnt smell is horrible walking past after parking - not to mention the dirty looks from the other condo residents. lol

    I'm hoping to find the leak this week-end. If not, I'll take it somewhere to get it up on a hoist and get some help finding it.

    Hopefully it's just your ps pump. It's not that hard to change. An extra pair of hands are helpful, but if not, still not that hard. Keep us updated.

    My p/s pump is leaking too! I just stuck my hand down (underneath the pump) there to feel around and the metal tube that goes to the hose was leaking. It looks like the clamp moved up the hose. Therefore, the clamp isnt all the way down, over the metal tube. So, there's a little leak right there.

    I know this is a old thread but I wanted to share my problem lol
