On the woman's car there has been a subtle vibration and an increasing noise. I guess grinding probably isn't the correct word but it sounds like metal knocking on metal. The car is a 97 with 109k on the clock. The noise increases with ground speed not engine speed. Also if you turn slightly to the right the noise ceases. I am thinking that it is probably a CV joint, but to be honest i don't know much about these cars. Trucks are my thing. I am just looking for some advice and/or ideas before I start tearing it a part.

You've diagnosed it pretty darn well. It is either the half shaft, or the wheel bearing. If it's kind of a "growling" noise - sort of like extreme road noise from crappy tires, then it's a wheel bearing/hub. Take a look inside the wheel well and see if you see any grease on the control arm, sway bar - well, generally just about anywhere. If you see it - that's because the CV boot is puking it out for some reason - likely a tear.

Jack up the front of the car and more the tire side to side and up and down. If it feels loose and the strut is not moving with the wheel it is a wheel bearing.

    Or a tie rod...

To be more specific - grab the tire at 9 and 3 o'clock and try to move the tire/wheel. Do the same at 12 and 6 o'clock. If it moves much at all - you either have A)loose lug nuts (don't laugh, I've seen it) B)worn tie rod C)bad hub (in this case, it would be really really bad)

    Cowmilker08,
Did you fix it yet? My 2001 GT with 150K miles is doing the exact same thing, including that part about the noise reducing or almost going away during a right turn, or even lane change for that matter and both front bearing assemblies were replaced 3k miles ago. Wheel bearing change helped, they were sloppy, but the noise didn’t go away. I think I’m probably going to replace both CV half shafts this weekend. By the way, all 4 tires are new, so I’m confident their not the source of the noise.

Sorry, i forgot to post the end of the story.
A new hub assembly fixed the noise.
