I have a 1998 grand prix and the alternator went out. I put another one on it and within five minutes of running it gets so hot you can not touch it, this does not seem normal to me, has anyone else had this problem before? Also my ac barley blows out of the vents, is there an easy way to clean the leaves and debris out of the under dash ac coil?

with regards to the blower, there's a couple things that could be going on.

    1) if there are leaves and debris, you need to get under the dash, remove the blower, and then you can reach into the plenum and start cleaning it out. I had a literal mouse nest where they brought in all kinds of string and fuzz. be careful so you don't damage the AC evaporator core

    2) low airflow could also be the evaporator core is blocked. if it develops a leak the oil in the refrigerant collects dust and dirt and clogs up the vanes. you'd have to pull the dash to replace the core.

    3) you could have a stuck blend door

Thanks for the info mguzzo. The blend door or the control switch could be the problem. When I switch from ac to defrost or any other selection it will not swap over. So blend door or bad switch what do you think?

air flow direction is vacuum powered in most of these cars. the line come off the top of the blower to the fire wall. or if na next tot he brake booster hose. then leads down the fender to the battery then down into the cars harness and into the cab to the hvac. check itfor cracks or not plugged in.

if you changed the battery in the resent past, id check there first. common break point when taking the battery in or out.
