Just watched this, and they were spot-on describing this community's origins and vibe during the early 2000's peak:
Storytime with Zoom, Tim & Matt | Talks with Trev | EP.6 | ZZPerformance - YouTube

Hope everyone gets a chance to hear it, and they definitely have alot more that can be shared.

The GPG story was something I forgot, because it was going to be a chance for those of us in attendance (100-200? members) to potentially see 3800 history be made. Instead, some of the MN crew got drunk and decided to mess with Zoom's car for a dumb laugh, breaking the unwritten code of ethics and delaying that moment. Thankfully, the car hit 9's a month later, but we had to see it on YouTube instead of live.

Other stories, like the rivalry to be first to 8's with MattM and Scott Cook's brother, Bob, and how we almost got to see Matt succeed on a 30-deg Nov day at Norwalk during the last(?) INTENSE Drag Day (IDD6?). I was standing near the burn-out box when they shut off the hose at the end of the day, and grabbed a random Mountain Dew 20oz sitting on the guard rail to give Matt something to aid his burnout (not that the TTGT needed much help). He went 9.01 on that pass!!! In front of a big crowd, we got to see an amazing run. That set the new record at the time, which was getting lowered throughout the day, with 3-4 9sec GP's participating (Scott's [broke trans], Matt's, Bob's [got to 9.4?], and ChrisH's RWD conversion [9.6?]).

Thanks for posting. That was pretty good.

I'm glad I was part of the 3800/Grand Prix scene back in the day when they were a big deal. It all started for me when my dad bought a 98 GTP sedan in the summer of 2001. I eventually bought my own in late 2004. 97 GTP 2 door in white. The club meets and BBQ meets were a lot of fun up around my area in Ontario Canada. My 97 GTP was unfortunately totaled in a fire in October of 2005, but I did replace it with a red 99 GTP 2 door a month later and still have the car today.

I do miss the old days when these cars were in their prime. That was a lot of fun. You could log on to the forums at pretty much anytime and there was always activity and new posts!

Nice, ya that Ontario-Quebec club seemed to be pretty busy. I hung out with some Upstate NY guys near my hometown, the Motor City club while I was in college, an the MN club while I worked there for a few years.

It was a whole lot of fun with plenty going on, starting just after Series II L67's hit the streets (97-98), until the last few 3800 cars were sold (07-09). I got my 1998 Daytona GTP in '02 and started from square one until I was working on mine and all my friends' builds 3-4yrs later, and never really stopped, aside from life/work/etc. things.

Nice. Love those blue 98 Daytonas. It's too bad GM didn't keep going with the 3800. The advancements they could have made with what was already a great engine would have been awesome.

thanks for posting the link to the video Dave. brought back some memories of the "vendor wars" that went on.
Too bad ClubGP forums are gone, all the crap talking threads are lost forever. OQCGP forums are gone too.

They come across a little cocky, within reason for the topic, but that's worse when those other guys with the new cars do shows. They benefit from associating with a great 20yr old shop... shoulders of giants, starting on 3rd base, etc.

Still, I hope they keep making these as a fun little chat about what's going on. Might try taking my car up there for a Dyno Day at some point.
