My 2008 GP always had issues with leaky-power steering. I’d top it off every few weeks. Then I bought the kind that supposedly stops leaks and for a month or two it worked great. Yesterday I’m pulling out of my job and the wheel was very hard to turn. I checked the fluid and filled it because it looked low and I made it home. Now I go to start my car this morning and the wheel won’t turn at all. The reservoir is full and I don’t see any leaks. But the wheel is super stiff and very noisy. I’m thinking it’s either the power steering pump or the rack and pinion. Has anyone experienced anything similar? Any idea what the cost would be for a replacement power steering pump or a rack and pinion?

I think the Delco pump is like $43. Not expensive anyway.

The rack depends if you need Magnasteer or not. New Delco MagnasteerII racks are about $400 for the part. Ebay has ones for cheap. People rave about detroit axle, for example. I'd rather pay more and not have to do it again, personally. Could get a bad Delco rack too though, never know.

Sounds like the pump packed it in.

Took it to my local shop who said my rack and pinion needs to be replaced. He’s charging me $841. Please tell me I’m not getting ripped off. I bought this car in 2016 for $5000 with around 130k miles on it. It’s now got 190k miles on it and I’ve put over $3000 into in three years. I drive about 60 miles a day but it’s all highway driving. I’m this close to trading it in for something new. Not even expecting $500 trade in value for it. Never had a car with more problems.

i would install that myself, its not that bad. racks are up to 200 rebuilt. napa sometimes has sales. i got mine from them for 160 iirc.

theres a few vids on line to show you the job. i can swap one in less than two hrs these days in the driveway.

you will need an alignment once your done, im sure that was part of the shops costs.

The car is already in the shop and the job will be done in the morning. The thing I don’t get is if my rack and pinion is shot then why is my power steering reservoir full? I’ve always had a slow leak but this time it’s still full. I am leery of this diagnosis. Is this possible?

they fail with out leaking all the time, starts out getting hard to turn left, then sooner or later its hard both ways.

So the car has been at the shop since Saturday. Work was promised on Monday but part arrived late so he offered me a discount on a rental. $30 for a 2008 ford fusion.Called yesterday(Tuesday) and yet again he was too busy. So I asked if I could use the car again and he said no problem and we can work out a discount. So here we are at wednesday. Im extremely wary of calling this guy. If it's still not done, do you think Im entitled to free use of the rental car until its complete or is this just the way it goes with auto shops?

So just got off the phone with the auto guy and now he says my power steering line is rusted & leaking (not pump). He will replace it for $100,and no labor charge. Does that sound right?

well being the line only costs 40 bucks, hes charging labor or a huge mark up.

this is why i do i my own work on my cars.

not the worst price ive heard of for something small tho.

This shop sounds shady, or they don't give a crap. I've done service-writing over the years, and never bumped a customer more than 1 day, and that was rare. If you can't do the job, tell the customer, don't string them along. And to say he will install the part for free, when he clearly is making a huge mark-up, that just confirms things.

I'd have my car out of there last week.

If you have 4 wheels, an engine and a transmission, you'll need a shop
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

So here’s the latest. I picked my car up yesterday afternoon and I have to say the wheel felt like butter. Very smooth turning. I live a mile from the shop so the drive home was satisfying. So i share my car with my son who drives 3 miles to his job. He made it there fine and called to say it drove great. Fast forward to 10:00 pm when went to leave he started the car and the wheel wouldn’t turn again. I drove there in the freezing cold and saw a huge puddle under the car. Anytime I added power steering fluid it poured out. I was furious. I called the guy who assured me that he would have it towed back in the morning and looked at. Well it’s noon EST and my car is still in that parking lot. I’m besides myself. I took off again from my job and I feel like this guy either has no idea what he’s doing or just doesn’t care.

sounds like the rubber return line broke at the pump, or it came off. its only hose clamped on there.

So today in NJ none of the roads or highways were plowed soI really got the chance to test it and so far it feels good. Ill go back out later and see if there are any leaks.
