is it even safe to drive the car? the mechanic said that if I can get the car moving I should be ok to get home which like I said is 30 miles away.

what a sh it show you got going on here.

id try not to drive with no fluid, the rack will die from not having power to it.

i know it just snowed again last night, but id pull the pass front wheel off and check the lines off the pump, you can see the lines pretty good with the tire off too.

The mechanic assured me once I got the car on the road the steering would get easier and he was right. I drove 30 miles back to his shop and left it with him again. At this point I don’t know who to blame? Is it the car or an incompetent mechanic?

incompetent mechanic is what my money is on.
PS problems arent something requiring rocket science and quantum mechanics to fix. theyre pretty dam simple.

You know what they say. Fool me once...,,.
Since I work in a school system and we had a snow storm last night I let the guy have the car all weekend. I’m going to check with him later today. The last I spoke to him he said some hose kept disintegrating and he’s waiting for the part. Now let me ask you this. Since he offers rentals, would it be his responsibility to provide one to me free of charge until it’s fixed?

lol yea I wouldn't go to this guy again if he paid you if something disintegrates once I don't give it the chance to do it again its going in the trash haha. you said you work in a school system next time go to the mechanic shop class for your repairs they'd probably give it to you for free. I know all the schools I went to did it for free only problem was a long wait but since you work there maybe you'd get a special treatment haha

the only hose that can break really is the rubber return line, now if he had actually replaced a line/hose, this would not be a broken 2 more times.

maybe he replaced it with a coolant or evap hose

more like he cut the hose off where it broke and clamped it back on. then did it again.

I actually had my car in my schools auto shop but I think I wore out my welcome with the shop teacher so I stopped going there lol. I need to call this guy and see what the status is of the car. I need to get back to work tomorrow and if he offered me a rental car cost free I’d tell him to take all the time in the world with my car to get it right. I just don’t know if he is legally allowed to give rentals for free. I mean I already paid him a little over $900 for this so he should.

So I just got off the phone with the mechanic and he said that this other hose that broke will cost me another $175 but he won’t charge me for the rental that I’ll need for tomorrow. So far I paid the initial $850 for the rack and pinion. Then when the linkage or something went it was another $130. Now I have to pay this $175. I have no idea what hose this is. I’m the one being hosed.

Pretty sure a dealership would have used OEM parts at a lesser cost.

be dam certain you get a list of ever single supposed part replaced. before you leave, pop the hood with so called mechanic there and have him show you what was replaced. in fact. i think id want the car on the lift so i can look at the rack and make sure its new.

its awesome ya have a auto shop class locally. i dont think its possible to wear out a welcome there- they need cars that are on the road to help teach students how to diagnose and fix. some of them school shop class cars that were donated can be a little hacked up and cars that are in service make for great teaching and learning.

Still haven’t heard from mechanic and my stomache is in knots waiting for the next problem. I actually typed up a document from the day I brought it there and everything I was charged and promised written down. If this guy tells me one more part is faulty I feel like getting a lawyer involved.

I am a computer tech at my school and the guy who teaches auto shop said that he would look at my car last year because it was overheating. So the next day I brought him and his class a couple of boxes of dunkin donuts as a thank you even though he said it wasn't necessary. Then a week later it kept over heating so he drained the radiator and whatever else and I thanked him profusely. He also looked at my muffler as It was loud and he managed to temporarily tie it up better. He sent me an email on part prices and where I could get them and he said he would do them. So i responded and I never heard back. He would even avoid me in the hallways so I think I maybe overstayed my welcome. If I had the money at the time I wanted to get him like a certificate for dinner for him and his wife but I was broke. We have since stopped avoiding each other but I think Ill keep things business here at work.

Just went to get car and mechanic who wasn’t even there but over the phone said they sent him the wrong part. Take the loaner again at no price he said. I know what that means.upsell me on some other part to make up for it.

i say it means take the loaner to the track and have some fun!
if im not mistaken there are only 2 lines on/in the PS system- the pressure line that delivers fluid to the rack and the return line. the pressure line would be the costly one but $175??? i dont think ive seen one over $100 anywhere online.

this is a real ****show for ya and sorry youre going through it. dont let him get off the hook scott free- voice your displeasure with this "mechanic". things can happen when workin on cars but dam!! this is not professional.

This guy keeps letting me have the loaner car for free but I just know he is going to keep marking up my part prices to get back his money. What I decided to do was watch every youtube video I can about rack and pinion parts, replacements and anything else so I can question him and know what I am talking about. I have seen a few already and have a better idea. If he tells me this line failed or that hose disintegrated, I can come back at him with some knowledge. I did actually ask the auto shop down the road from me what he would charge for the same job and his price was $950 which is lower than the quote I got from the shop Im at now. BUT, with these extra parts, I am already $300 over that price. So the story continues. I really do appreciate input from all of you. Even if you all thought I was in the wrong, Id still want to know. Thanks again!

I got the car back on wednesday and the steering has been great. As per usual with this auto shop, on my way to work today I got a message"reduced engine power" and I could feel my car slow down. Please tell me this has something to do with what this guy was working on. From what Im reading online it could be a mass airflow sensor or catalytic converter or a bunch of other things. I just find it strange how it just started appearing after he worked on it. last summer my car was overheating so he said that the head needed to be rebuilt and radiator replaced which he did for about $2000. 2 days later, my engine light comes on and first it's my crankshaft sensor which I paid him to replace, then it was my O2 sensor which I replaced. But the engine light never went out all this time. Now this message. Any ideas besides driving this thing off a cliff?

yea I don't know about a head rebuild because of an overheating car maybe just a head gasket change but I would go to a local auto parts store if you can and they will scan your car for free then you'll look up the codes and get a much better diagnosis some people on here even say you can get a scanner cheap I just use my aero force gauge but that's around $250 so I wouldn't want you spending that. but yea those sensors can go every now and then I did an o2 sensor last summer and plan on changing my crankshaft sensor while I change the crankshaft pulley just because I know they can go bad especially on high mileage like mine. but personally I always want the engine lights off even though most the time they are small problems if a big problem comes up you may not know because the lights already on. plus on my car it beeps uncontrollably every time on get in if I have and engine lights on so it also keeps me sane haha
