First and foremost, hello, and thanks for having me. I'm sure it's here somewhere, or somewhere somewhere lol but I'm trying to get info on a downgrade. Yes, I know how stupid this is. Problem is I can't afford what I need now. My 06 gtp threw a rod. I have a low mile 98 gtp sitting out back totaled from the rear. Anyone know what I have to do to get my series 2 running in a series 3 car? It hurts my soul to have to downgrade but funds are tight and I need back on the road before losing my job. I can find endless info on series 2 to 3,but not 3 to 2. Mostly because it's retarded, but someone's had to been in my shoes. I have a complete 74k mile series 2 car. Please help someone please.

If you have enough time and tools, just pull both engines, strip them both down to short blocks, then just bolt all of the 06 parts onto the 98 block.

You can also clean and paint, regasket, and make everything pretty.

Just don't touch the main or rod caps on the good block, and you'll be fine.

pretty simple. pull both engines, swap the 06 intake and tb and the oil pan and lower mounts brackets. and reinstall the 98 block. not really a downgrade. a running low comp engine is a running low comp engine.

might want to do the rear main seal and cover gasket and the front timing cover and crank seal there too. you know while its out why have leaks?

sounds like both are supercharged, so heads can stay on.

id re gasket everything else tho. and the pan bolts, put some thread sealant on them, so they cant leak later on. oil can seep down the threads and make them little oil dots on each bolt.

6 to one, half-dozen to the other.

Series 3 heads are slightly better than series 2, since you were wondering whether this would be considered a downgrade...

If you swap the heads, there's zero downgrading; If you don't touch the heads, there's a slight downgrade.

It's up to you how much work you want to do and whether it's worth the time and effort and extra gaskets.

This is true... Plus later on he can go ahead and swap the heads if he feels the need.

You would never see a difference on a dyno with series 3 heads vs series 2.

Jesus you guys are amazing. Didn't think I'd get such a quick response. Thanks everyone for the advice. My biggest concerns were time and money. I'm relieved the heads can stay. The newer heads are obviously a little better, but for the few extra bucks for gaskets and head bolts, I can't do right now. So if I have this right, pretty much change oil pan, maybe a mount or 2, I heard possibly the alternator, and everything from the lim up? Sounds to good to be true. I really appreciate you guys.

you might have to swap the ac compressor bracket, i tried to use one off a l36 on my supercharged set up and the belt touched its self or some crazy crap. so i had to swap its bracket out to the l67 bracket. theres a rear side bracket too. migh be best to swap them over too just to be safe.

another tip, un bolt the ac compressor and lay it on the sub frame, no need to take its lines off and let all the gas go.

Honestly the whole swap should go pretty quickly, you can easily have it done in a weekend.

Ok thanks guys. Took me about 3 hours to pull my 06 out today. Hopefully same time to pull my 98 tomorrow. If I'm lucky, 5-6 hours to get it in. Thanks for the assistance everyone.

In case you notice it when working on the engines, the block for your 06 will still have the casting that says Series II. GM kept the block and used so few different parts that most of the time you won't be able to tell the difference looking at them quickly if they aren't dressed up with their accessories on.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.
