If you have a volume control that makes the volume go up when it's turned down, or vice versa, this may be of interest to you. I've already repaired this issue twice over the years in my 12-year old 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix. The fix for me was replacing the volume control in the stereo. This control is an "encoder", not a standard potentiometer. That is, it contains a pair of on/off switches, not a variable resistor strip. The part number for mine was printed on the side of it in hard-to-read lettering, and was 16209722. I'd suggest calling GM car radio repair shops to see if they'd sell you one (that's what I successfully did). As of this posting, the company at www.rivetech.com would sell that part to end users like me. I'd only suggest replacing it yourself if you have such soldering experience. Otherwise, take it apart and pay a TV repair shop or techie friend to solder it for you. Good luck!

While I appreciate your need to police the forums to keep them clear from spam, I can assure you I am in no way related to the company I mentioned above. Further, I didn't even buy my volume control from them because I had found a different shop before, one that no longer sells these encoders to end users like us. And frankly, I haven't found anyone in any Pontiac/GM forum on the web who even knew how to successfully repair this issue or obtain this part, so cut me some slack as I try to offer some useful information.

Grand Prix owners are ignorant Jerks by nature, so we just assume everyone else is EVIL like us!

I noticed that the www.rivetech.com company/website is gone, so I don't know where to find these volume controls anymore; but I did find a post by a person who claims they can be cleaned:
