So, swapped stereos from our truck to my car and vice versa. Now, I have discovered that the rear channel is no good on this stereo (truck only had front speakers). No biggie there, I’ll just order a new stereo. But, now I have no dash lights, I can’t figure out what wire should be switched 12v for them. Any ideas?

Well then. Went out this morning to drive to work, and the dash light all work. I don’t know. Weird.

Leave the head unit in the vehicle that the factory put there. No mysteries. Problems solved.

Lol. That has to be the funniest thing I have ever heard about a 20 year old car that has had countless owners, not to mention that aside of wheels, a deck with all the newer amenities is one of the most commonly changed items.

On another note, figured it out, bought the adapter for the steering wheel controls, fixed the intermittent issue and operates just like OEM, save for Bluetooth and great sound.

Having problems with my car as the OP did, where I have no idea what went wrong or why, is not the kind of excitement I prefer to have in my life.

And save for the dash being made ugly. BTW, you can get rebuilt OEM head units with Bluetooth added, if you feel compelled to listen to the inferior sound of MP3s. Or, you could just burn the MP3s to a CD. The OEM unit plays those, you know.

Also, that lots of people do something is the worst imaginable reason to do it. More people drive Toyota Corollas than any other car ever made. The Corolla is small, ugly, has a wannabe Lexus grille that serves no practical purpose, and has garbage plastics and an outmoded drivetrain. I'd rather have an older vehicle with twice the horsepower, the chance of surviving a high-speed collision, and at least three pieces of technology (standard ABS, DoD, and automatic headlights) that are beyond Toyota's capacity to put in a vehicle that cost five times as much as mine.

And last but not least, maybe you'll answer this question. No one else seems able. What is it about 1953 radio technology which leads you to believe that ACDelco and Delphi (and Pioneer, which makes some GM head units) are not capable of reproducing it, but still leaves them perfectly capable of making software and hardware which manages your engine, transmission, ABS, and emissions? ABS and lockup torque converters didn't even exist in 1953.
