I recently finished Deleting DOD in my 05 GXP, and it has developed a Lifter tick that comes and goes. I can let the car sit at idle till it gets up to temp and its still quiet. But after driving around for about 10 minutes it will tick at idle. The ticking comes and goes, and sometimes its louder than other times. I've read that other people have had problems with LS7 Lifters and high lift cams, but that was around .650 lift , and i'm only at .600 on my cam. The Tick sounds like its coming from the front side, and I even took the valve cover off to double check that everything was still tight. Im not even sure that its a Lifter tick but that's the only thing that really makes sense to me. I would think that it would be ticking at a constant rate if something was really wrong. Im not really sure what to do at this point.

Seems fairly common with LS7 lifters, even truck guys notice it and if you have headers it makes the noise even louder.

I'd just live with it. Otherwise you'll be spending several hundred if not $400-500 on some really nice lifters.

What happens with LS4 lifters and DOD that requires lifter replacement after many miles? I have a '08 GXP with 159,000 miles and very minor lifter noise at times, similar to my 2014 Chev SS with 7,000 miles. Why would I replace the lifters or disable DOD? And, how do I disable DOD?

People replace the lifters or delete the system entirely because the DoD lifters collapse and fail. They will cause a permanent misfire and even in some extreme cases break and damage the camshaft. The early DoD stuff from 2005-2009ish was prone to oil consumption too when it went down into 4 cylinder mode. The LS4 is known to eat oil.

If you just want it disabled it will require a tune or the AFM disabler thing that they sell on amazon/ebay that plugs into the OBD2 post.

My LS4, with 160,000 miles uses about a quart of oil every 3000 miles. Lifters are as quiet as my 2014 Chev SS LS3. It has always had synthetic oil in it--not synthetic blend, but full synthetic. Is there a reason to remove the heads & put new lifters in? If yes, do I get the valves ground while the heads are off? How about valve springs with that many miles? Wher would one stop?

I believe our LS4 Grand Prix's were the first GM car to use DOD. I've not heard horror stories of problems with lifters as some of you are relating, nor have I experienced any DOD-related problems except the shuddering when stopping.

The decision is up to you on whether or not you think you need to replace anything.

The AFM/DoD failure is a very common issue among the 2005-2008 grand prix's/impala's/monte carlo's/buick allures and they used this same early design with the 2005-2008 Trail Blazers and Envoys with the 5.3's. Heck even the early 5.3's from 2007-2009 in the half ton trucks suffer from possible failure and oil consumption issues.

If you have no abnormal noises and you are just fine with keeping the AFM/DoD active then nothing has to be done. If you want to slow down the oil consumption then disabling the system with a custom tune can do that. Or if you want to remove the system entirely that would require replacing all lifters with new regular lifters, new NON DoD camshaft, new cam gear, remove and replace the valley plate with a non AFM/DoD plate, new push rods, new head gaskets. Other minor odds and ends with a camshaft swap then a custom tune to round it all out.

Generally people that don't hear much about don't work in shops that repair this stuff often or they don't work in the aftermarket that hear of this stuff all the time. Tons of engines end up being problem free and a large handful of the thousands of engines out there suffer these types of failures.
