a co-workers thinking about buying a used/private grand prix gxp. he's somewhat mechanically incline (oil changes, suspension swaps etc) but doesn't know much on engine and the more detailed stuff. heres a link to the one he's planning on checking out:
not sure why the seller put LT-4 in the title?
2006 Pontica Grand Prix GXP LT-4/5.3 v8 - cars & trucks - by owner - vehicle automotive sale

I told him to check the trans fluid and if he ends up getting any type of GXP to get a trans cooler, a tune, and look into eliminating the DoD and lifter change(?). what're your advise and suggestions?

As long as the trans shifts good and doesn't slip, and the engine doesn't tick it should be fine. Around 150k miles is when the lifters start to go. Mine had about 160k before it started ticking real bad. Also be sure to check the motor mounts.

changing the lifter's necessitates changing all the dod/afm components. you can disable the dod/afm through the tune pretty easily if you know someone that has HP Tuners.

    375hp, lulz.

Not even close, they make 303 from the factory, headers don't add magic butterfly horsepower.

It says clean car fax, ask for a copy. Any major service done at say a dealership or major repair shop for warranty reason or major engine/transmission repair should show up. You can gauge what was possibly done in the past with that.

Aside for the engine/transmission the rest if basic stuff that any grand prix can have wrong with it. Broken/blown out motor mounts, control arms bushing, wheel bearings, brakes etc etc.

well I told him to pass on this deal. the seller is actually a small dealership and he doesn't know much on the history of it other than whats on car fax. apparently the trans was replaced but by some small town/local shop that currently has ~10k miles on it. unknown tune but that was what the seller/dealer was told when he bought it at auction back earlier this year.

edit-my co-worker did find another deal, this time an 05 GXP with 43k miles on it for $5k. its on OfferUp app/website

That 2006 wasn't such bad deal if the seller was negotiable. Don't think any less of a small town transmission shop, these transmissions are not rocket science and most every decent shop knows all about their short comings and the updates to factory failures. Contrary to popular belief not everyone needs a TEP transmission. If it really was replaced and has 10k you are already ahead of the game. The tranny should have never been put behind a V8, that's the real issue as this over stuffed engine compartment suffers from heat soak. The 2005 has less miles which is great but things fail with age too.

I see. well the 05 has a rebuilt title cause it was involved in an accident which explains the low miles. the search continues.
