Hey guys, I have a 2005 GXP with 160,100 miles on it. It had the annoying tick when I bought it, so I tried replacing the oil pressure sensor with no luck. After I replaced the oil pressure sensor and cleared the code the cel light came back on after about 100 miles. At that same time I started to get the low oil pressure warning every now and then at idle. So I threw in some new oil and a new filter. Im running mobil one full synthetic 0w20, and now I get the low oil pressure warning everytime it sits at idle. And the tick is still loud and annoying. Here are a couple of videos showing how bad the tick is. Thanks for any input.

The loud tick is the lifters/rockers not getting any oil, I'd stop running the motor before damage occurs.

My first thought for oil pressure problems is the oil pump/o-ring on the pick up tube.

sounds like a lifter or busted valve spring.

why such a thin oil? should you not be running 30 weight?

0W20 is okay for the LS engines, would be great in the winter for starting. The newest GM V8's run 0W20 from the factory now but they are much more advanced engines.

Th 20 weight when warm shouldn't cause any harm.

A memeber on another forum recommended the mobil one 0w20. he suggested that the oil would get to the top end easier. what oil would you guys recommend? how would I go about Diagnosing my issue? Its not sounding to good so far.

Hook up a real oil pressure tester, it will likely fail it and only show less than 10 psi if the oil light is on.

Then it's time to dig into the engine, remove the timing chain cover, remove the oil pump and inspect it. Check the pick-up tube o-ring too. When you are that far just replace the pump and o-ring.

This is not going to be a fun or easy repair.

    No.

I'm willing to bet the ticking sound doesn't go away while you are driving and comes back as soon as the rpms drop. That is still a major oil pressure issue.

I'm going to have the car oil pressure tested later. But i wanted to start looking into how much work its going to be to replace the oil pump, and o-ring on the pick-up line. do you know a good source for a detailed thread with pictures? and also how much extra work would it be to throw a cam in while its torn apart?

doubt the oil pump is your issue. if anything you need to make sure the last chance filter isn't clogged. it's underneath the opsu. the video does sound like lifter tick though. I have a set of dod lifters you can get. but the head must be pulled.

If you have to dig into the motor anyway, you should consider a full DOD delete. It would be highly beneficial to get rid of every DoD part, including the cam.

LS4 common problem the last chance filter under oil pressure sensor should always be replaced when replacing switch. Oil pressure switch GM #12616646 or AcDelco #D1846A the last chance filter is GM#12585328 they list it as valve lifter filter. Both can be found at online (Rockauto-E-Bay). Ok after watching you tube video's don't do what they do. First remove engine cover, unplug switch, use socket loosen up not all the way, one hand under one finger on top finish unscrewing and remove, now make sure sealing area is clean, next look down in the filter has 2 ears on it use a good pair of niddle nose pliers grab one ear and pull up and out. Now lube new filter o-ring with oil use pliers to insert then snap in place, install new oil switch. Just did one today total time 12 minutes. Just a note using synthetic oil 5W30 oil you will find this filter usually clean.

Unfortunately I already replaced the oil pressure sensor and the filter underneath with no luck. It still ticks.

Hi I'm new to this forum . I'm having same issue on my 07 gxp but my ticking goes away once it hits 1000 to 1500 rpm could mine be oil pump? or a bad lifter? could a bad lifter cause oil pressure loss? thanks for replies.

If your not getting a low oil pressure warning then I wouldnt worry about the oil pump. I would try removing the oil screen under the pressure sensor to see if that helps. maybe also replace the sensor to if you havent. If that doesnt work then try driving around for 100 miles with about half a qrt of trans fluid, the detergents in the trans fluid can help free up sticky or stuck lifters. I pulled the motor on my car but have yet to tare into it.

Hi I do have low oil pressure on idle to about 800 to 900 rpms bit lower then this the low oil pressure light comes on or taking a left off an offramp when letting off the gas. But of I keep rpm up it doesn't do it . If I have to do oil pump does engine have to come out? Or can it be done in car? the last chance filter is clean. Would bad afm lifters cause the low oil pressure.

I hear a lot of lifter failure with the DOD so this right here was the first thing that sprang to mind.
