Thread: (FWI) Fenderwell intake...how does it affect MPG?

okay, here is the dirty:

for someone to create an FWI and for it to be beneficial you need it to be 4" piping with a maximum bend of 22.5* and the biggest cone filter you can find. the problem with it actually being in the fender is that you have to put a big bend in it which i dont care for. i think so long as you get it close to the fender opening then youre golden.

if youre looking for the most power overall you should do well with some form of a short ram like i mentioned above. once you get past a 3.4 setup (if you have a GTP) its really best to just run an open cone (right off the throttle body).

a nice 4" intake that goes near the fender would probably be the best.

Essentially with an intake setup (without an IC or Spray) you want the incoming air to be as close to the ambient temp as you can while STILL keeping the bends in the tubing to a minimum.

I personally like a CAI instead of a FWI. The downfall however is price as the price for a CAI is much more then a homemade FWI. And in reality the gains aren't that significant.

I have the same or better MPG's before and after the FWI, and I noticed a definite improvement over the stock intake performance wise, both sound, throttle response and maybe a little bit of power. My guess would be maybe 5 HP

no you'll be good....dont go puddle driving like a truck tho...

I got an MPG drop after my intake install. I went from an average of 19.5 MPG (mostly city driving) down to 18.0 MPG after the install. I would chalk up about .5 MPG to the fact that I drove the car a little harder after the install so that I could enjoy the whine of my supercharger, so about a 1 MPG drop overall, but a nice boost in performance, and a good hit of pure fun.

As for the water, I have often wondered about putting some sort of "deflector" inside the fender that would prevent water from getting splashed up inside from a large puddle or something, but I haven't done it. When I do take my car to the car wash (for those times that I don't have the time to wash it by hand) I make sure that I don't get the "undercarriage wash"... No sense in having the car wash spray pressurized water in my intake area!

Other than that, you should be fine. Small puddles are no problem since the water doesn't splash up until the tires (behind the intake area) hit it.
