Ho lee chit...well...if it isn't some bad lifter noise going on under my hood then I don't know what it is - I would hope not SC bearings or something. I just got to work and popped the hood to check on my ATF level since I know it's leaking a bit and I noticed it's pretty loud considering engine should by warm by now. I'm assuming lifer tap could be audible from the cabin when accelerating if bad enough? Not sure if it explains the lack of power though... Honestly the car just feels as if you're trying to take off with the brakes on or something most of the time.

yikes! Well, bad lifters would make noise and affect power. The supercharger would be noisy and maybe get harder to turn, so maybe that could cause a reduction in power as well. is it a loud ticking or does it sound like someone is crushing rocks?

From the few seconds i see, and awkward angle, it sounds normal, except for the exhaust leak.

Never heard it over other noise until now XD my new coil packs came in on Friday so I changed them Sunday, car is feeling a bit more responsive but still have the hissing under acceleration and at idle that you pointed out. I'm thinking maybe where the crossover pipe meets the downpipe, I noticed it is pretty black around there compared to the original color of the pipe. It would also explain why I hear it directly in front of me when accelerating.

Have you tried to tighten the 2 bolts there?.. Will take a few minutes and will give you the answer

Have not had a chance to :| what size are those?
I noticed on mom's Bonnie that same area is dark too so I don't know if it really is necessarily a sign of a leak but I can't think of anything else to cause the hissing/rustling plastic bag sound under acceleration directly in front of me.
Also yesterday was my third time filling up with 93 so I don't know if it is that causing the problem/sound. Even with new coils now I still find occasionally when I go start the car to move it/let my sister in, he will sound like he's slightly misfiring... -__-
No amount of tea tree shampoo will keep me from scratching my head at this one.

How's the flex joint? I know mine disintegrated in spectacular fashion recently. It started off as a mild exhaust leak sound and grew ever so slightly louder over the course of about 1000-1500 miles. Then one day it let loose entirely and all the while I did notice a slight performance decrease as it got louder. Now that it's fixed it feels like a new car. Heck, I even sold the Monte SS because I knew I'd be driving the GTP every time now.

    I salute the Monte.

Hm, will have to look at that too. Since that downpipe was put in last May I'd think it'd still be good but never know. It's really weird though, has never really gotten loud in the front, only the hiss I could never hear until it was pointed out. And since I feel like I noticed the noise start around last Feb when I got the rack replaced, BEFORE I got the downpipe replaced, you'd think it's coming from elsewhere... (well me I'm convinced it has to do with the rack lmao because it started afterwards and like I said for a week after new inners it felt perfect)

So what would be the range of symptoms I could expect from a leaking rack, then? Besides fluid in the boots I guess. I haven't really noticed my steering get all that much tighter but that might be because the magnasteer works now with rebuilt ABS module (thanks again to Cheap-ABS )

If the downpipe is that new (and not stock style) that's probably not gonna be your problem. Mine was the original bellow style flex joint, which are kind of known for having issues.

The stock flex joint is not the typical braided steel mesh type thing you see on aftermarket downpipes. It's a strange cone and cup design held together by a stainless steel corrugated bellow. In my case the internal cone that is supposed to deflect the exhaust heat away from the bellow broke off, overheating the bellow, which disintegrated from the heat.

Yeah, you should be fine with that. Not that those kind don't come apart eventually, but it's a lot easier to see when they have. The stock style could be blown out and you wouldn't be able to see it because the cup covers everything.

Hmmm...just wondering....if a head gasket blows on the outside (no coolant getting into combustion chamber but exhaust gases escaping from cylinder heads) would that technically be considered an exhaust leak? And possibly be audible? (hissing/sound of plastic bag in the wind). Just curious. I remember last I went to check my P/S fluid the cap was covered in soot.... and I also feel like at the base of the sc body looks like there might be some too for some reason, all around the perimeter of it.

well when I had a manifold gasket leak it would make a ticking noise like a bad alarm clock haha because obviously the one cylinder was only making noise every time it fired so I assume it would be the same way for a head gasket leak of this nature as the cylinder will either only make noise during firing or make a different noise for each stroke of the piston. but that is weird the cap and super charger base are covered in soot mine is all covered in soot as well but so is the rest of my engine bay haha. maybe you have a leak at the super charger to LIM that would make sense if it was a constant hissing sound then again title of the post is dosent make sense so idk

Yup, there is dark gunk around injectors/base of sc and below the sc snoot however that would be closer to the LIM. But I do see a decent amount of it on the sides of the heads/valve covers.
