I am in need of someone's opinion here.
Recently my engine started making some serious noise and I took it to the shop. They said I had a bad rod bearing and that the motor was toast.

I got a used motor installed and everything about the car is wrong now.

They took out my motor and put in another 3800 from a 2005 Monte Carlo SS - EDIT - Not supercharged.

Mechanic said that it was normal as it is the same motor.

Well, the car does not shift properly now and feels like it has 1/2 the power it had.

He claims my transmission is going out -but it was fine when I brought it in.

I am wondering, if they just switched motors, is there any possibility that the motor and trans are not compatible? Different gearing?

I am at a loss and ready to get a lawyer....ARGH!

Any info at all would be much appreciated.

    -Mike

    There's no supercharger on it.
The motors 'look' the same, he said the only difference was there was no oil cooling line on mine.

From what I read there is an L26 and an L36 motor (depending on year)
And my L36 would have been replaced by the 2005 L26.

Forgive me if I am WAY off course...I'm not a car guy - I'm in IT.

Somewhere your information has gotten mixed up. The 2005 Monte Carlo SS had the L32 (supercharged) which FFDP showed you up there.

Very interesting - just repeating 'what I heard from the mechanic'.
It looks like it could be from the LT not the SS.
Good catch - thanks....the more I learn the better I can chat with these cats.

    Update:

The used motor was from a 2005 Impala - not a Monte like I thought.

So I took it back to the shop.
They finally see what I mean when I say it has no power.

They kept it for a day and a half and said come get it - we have no idea why it is like this.

Then they said to take it to a GM dealer - on their dime.
So - tomorrow it's off to the dealer for a diagnosis.

This is incorrect. The 2005 Monte Carlo SS came with the L67 (Gen 3 M90). However, you are correct that mmullings is has his information mixed up though because the only engine offered in the 2005 Monte Carlo SS was the L67. If the 3800 came from a 2005 Impala (or 2005 Monte Carlo LT for that matter), it would be an L36, not an L26. You can tell the difference between the two due to the UIM manifolds (L36 is plastic, L26 is aluminum) and the L26 has an electronic t/b.

Good luck with the problems that you're having. At least the shop is covering the dealership costs.

    Update:

After GM dealer did some diags on the car:

A leaking o-ring on a PCV and a completely clogged catalytic converter.

Car runs like a champ - like it was de-neutered....

    Thanks all for help.
