Hey Guys, I just bought a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix 3.8.. After buying the car I notice that there is a burnt smell from the engine after driving it a little bit, but when I open the hood there is no smoke or anything like that. Is there anything I should worry about? The smell does go away after 10-20 mins.. Thanks guys

What does it smell like? Oil? Coolant (sweet smell)? Does it seem to smell after you brake/come to a stop quickly?

I'd be willing to bet that the valve covers are leaking oil (especially the front) and is being burned off by the manifolds. Look under the front valve cover where the plug wire guide is and see if it looks wet/black. If so, then the cover is leaking.

If you replace both valve covers then be sure to install new grommets as well. Fel-Pro sells a good set of gaskets/grommets for this.

I agree...my car was recalled for that exact reason. I didnt have any leaks but there were apparently enough out there that did, for them to send out a recall.

03 GTP...Its got pulleys and stuff.

Thank you for the quick reply.. I cant really describe the smell but its just a really strong burning smell.. Not sweet burning smell at all... If it is the valve cover leaking is this a big issue? Should I take it to an mechanic right away?? Sorry for the noob question..

If you are unable to do it I'd definitely get it to someone who can. They were recalled because the oil on the hot manifold was causing fires.

so the valve cover gaskets are leaking or the fuel rail quick disconnects are leaking.

you need to open the hood and find out whats going on and fix it ASAP.

Just pop the hood and take a look. No need to go underneath. Def. check both fuel line connections. Forgot about that one. Make sure it's running when you check it for that.

Either way, yes, I would get it fixed soon, as the oil can build up and cause a fire, and well you know how gas is, always wanting to burn things
