I have a 1996 Grand prix that recently lost the motor, the body is in impeciable condition and i really dont wanna thow the body away, With that said I also have a 1991 Grand Prix 3.1 with and excellent running engine and trans but the body is toast. Is the Motor from the 91 a direct swap into the 96? The motor and trans seem to be the same to bolt in but my concern is the wiring hooking up fine without making a mess of a harness. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I figured it would bolt in the same but my concern is the wiring. I thought possibly that the 94/95 model may have variences in the wiring from the 91/93 models. Thats my main concern

If you're concerned about the wiring, just swap all the sensors from your '96 engine into your '91 engine.

But are there any extra sensors on the newer car that the the older engine do not have the hook ups for? Or anything on the harness that wont directly connect to the engine?

Interchange: 1991–1993 models were Multi-port injection, and had a single crank sensor for computer timing. 1994-1995 models used the same long block, but had different cam carriers and timing cover. 1996–1997 models used a modified version of the same short block and had different heads. 91-93 motors cannot be used in later models due to lack of sensors needed for the newer computer systems. (Found on Wikipedia, GM 60-Degree V6 engine)

If you could find a 94 and up 3.1 it should work.

With that said is it possible to use the computer from the 1991 in the newer car to make it run correct?

I'm rather new here but I would have to say anything is possible but sounds like it might be a lot of time & effort to switch over the computer & harness, as well as anything else you would have to swap over.

    A 96 is a 3100 OBDII while a 91 has a 3.1 with a OBDI system. Lot's and lot's wiring to get it work.
