Hi all, Im relativley new here and need some help. I just had the transmission rebuilt on my 01 Grand Prix GT about a month ago. no complaints until i was coming back from a road trip from Michigan back to Wisconsin. I got stuck in Chicago Traffic. After being stuck in traffic for a while I noticed that under light accelertaion my car seem to shutter or viberate when it shifted from first to second. If I accelerated hard however it shifted just fine. It just happend during light acceleration. All the other shifts were always fine witn no vibration or shutter. Now ever since I came home it has stopped shuttering or vibrating. Could it have been because of the weather? It was 95 degrees that day and I had 4 adults and the trunk was full of bags. I had the transmission tech drive it and they told me that it seems that nothing is wrong and will not check it as it is shifting with no issues. My fear is that I drive my over 500 miles a week and my warrenty voids after 12,000 miles. I cant afford to rebuild the transmission again if in fact something is going out on the transmission again. Do you guys gave any thoughts? (Tranmission was rebuilt the first time as car lost overdrive and jolted and slipped into gears)

    Thanks!

Did they install a new PCS aka EPC soleniod with the rebuild?

Likely it just got hot. If you have a stock pcm, the temp was likely running 220F ish and the trans was probably 230ish.

I'm not sure. When the car was at idle during the traffic jam the temp gauge was half way between 190 and 210 mark. Im not the greatest when it comes to Transmissions. All I know is that they did a complete rebuild including the TC. The owner told me when I dropped the car that these transmissions have updated parts due to them poorly being built and he was replacing them with those. I think he called them "hard parts'. I remember him also saying that there was a valve the caused the transmission to fail the first time but can't remember what he called it. When the car was at idle during the traffic jam the temp gauge was half way between 190 and 210 mark. Should I do anything to the trans to prevent this from happening again like installing a HD oil cooler or adding Lucas to it?

Tough to say.. most don't have the issue you had. But it was hot temps outside and your temp gauge on your car may not be the most accurate thing in the world. Although likely you had the AC on..so the fans were running and keeping you as cool as possible.

I usually don't do an external cooler because of the winter.

Mine has been doing this on and off since I bought the car in January. Mine seems to happen too....even under hard acceleration.

mine also did the same exact thing. bought the car it didnt do it. 6 months later it started shuddering. then it stopped doing that. my initial thought was okay there is less clutch material so when it tried to change gears it would shudder because of lack of friction material during gear change. then after even a few more months of more driving it would just slip into gear because of NO friction material left. at least thats what seemed to happen to mine. now with a rebuilt trans i have 0 problems.

Except the OP is on a new rebuild. All clutches and bands should be updated/replaced along with seals. All parts checked and stuff like the EPC and 4th hub shaft replaced automatically.

I'm really unsure what to suggest to keep it from happening again.

I would be curious to know what the builder meant by hard parts. Some builders will just test the control solenoids/valves and put them back in.

    Ask the builder:
    What valve went bad?
Was the valve body repaired or replaced?
Were all shift, control and apply valves and solenoids replaced?
If not, what parts were reused?
It's a CUMMINS Dodge not a Dodge Cummins
